NetReady Core Utils and TiVoWeb Installation

Moving and Installing the Files on Your TiVo

Your TiVo should now be up and running on your network. If you are an advanced user, and already have a preferred ftp program installed on your PC, you can skip the next few steps or do them in your own way. In either case, you will need the IP address of the TiVo on your network. If you are uncertain of your TiVo IP address, use the following tutorial, Locating your Networked TiVo.

Using Command Line FTP and to Move the Install Files to Your TiVo

From the Start Menu, select Run and issue the ftp command with your IP address (example below):

An FTP session should open up and you can simply hit the ENTER key twice to log into your TiVo. Now you will need to issue several commands to prepare your FTP client and transfer the appropriate files to your TiVo. The session is transcribed below, but here the commands in the order you should enter them:

1. lcd c:\PTVtemp (that is a lower-case "L" - you are changing to the local directory on your PC where you unpacked the install files.)

2. binary (this tells FTP to move the file as a binary file, not a text file)

3. cd /var/tmp (this changes the directory on the TiVo accordingly - note the difference between "/" and "\" and use the appropriate ones when directed!)

4. send PTVnetready.tivoweb (this sends the installation script to your TiVo)

5. send PTVtivoweb.tar.gz (this sends the applications to your TiVo)

Please see the transcript below. If you receive any errors, then you've typed something incorrectly or omitted a step.

Using the Windows File Manager to Move the Install Files to Your TiVo

Using the right mouse button, first select the ftp-session2 icon with the right mouse button and when the menu pops up, select properties. Change the IP address in the appropriate field to your local IP address, but be sure to leave the remainder of the URL intact. Do the same for the telnet-session icon.

Double-click on the ftp-session2 icon which will open a new browser window. Now open the install folder (default is C:\PTVtemp) and copy the following files into the window you opened. (It should be copied into the /var/tmp directory on the TiVo).

PTVnetready.tivoweb
PTVtivoweb.tar.gz

Running the Installation Script

Now its time to install the files on your TiVo! Your Windows installation should already contain some version of TELNET on it. If it does not, you can download one for free. We like Windows' built-in app, Hyperterminal (there is a free extension you can download here, too). Another free and popular TELNET application is TeraTerm Pro.

From the Start Menu, select Run and issue the telnet command with your IP address (example below):

Alternative method: If you haven't already, using the right mouse button, first select the telnet-session icon with the right mouse button and when the menu pops up, select properties. Change the IP address in the appropriate field to your local IP address, but be sure to leave the remainder of the URL intact. Double-click on the telnet-session icon which will open a new window and you will be presented with the bash-2.02# prompt.

You only need to type two things:

1. cd /var/tmp (actually, this step should be optional, but we want to ensure you are in the correct directory before attempting to run the installation script)

2. sh ./PTVnetready.tivoweb (note, that its a forward-slash that is required here)

You will be asked whether you have a DirecTiVo or Standalone TiVo device as the installation progresses - it is important to select the correct device-type or unexpected results may occur (if you make a mistake, you can hit ctrl-c to interrupt the process and simply start over again) A transcript of a successful installation is provided below. If you receive any other messages or errors during the installation, you should try it again. If the errors persist, then you may have moved the files to your TiVo incorrectly, and you should try that again. This installation cannot harm your TiVo, so if you need to start over again, you do not need to worry about anything.

Now that the installation is complete, you need to restart your TiVo for the changes to take effect. Your unit may have a different IP address after it reboots, so once again, if you are unsure how to determine your system's IP address, you can use this tutorial.

Additional Support Resources

Congratulations on successfully installing these utilities onto your networked TiVo! As a reminder, these tools are released and distributed under the GPL. For additional support, you can search for answers and post questions on a variety of easy-to-use interactive forums: The AVSforum has some very interesting areas, specifically the TiVo Community Forum Underground Playground. We are a sponsor of these forums and are often there answering questions, along with many other experienced folks. Additionally, we offer the DVRupgrade Forums for more advanced topics; there are not as many members on our own forums, however some of them have a great deal of experience. There are also a variety of interesting and advanced techniques documented at the DealDatabase Forums. Members there are very technical, however there is plenty of useful information for those who have the patience to read and have good technical abilities.
