| Networking your Series2 DirecTV TiVo DVR |
PTVnet is the gateway to a truly networked DVR. Use a web browser
to list your TiVo's content, schedule recordings, and even control your upgraded
TiVo remotely.
Wouldn't it be great to remotely control your TiVo from your PC
desktop? How about from your laptop or a public Internet station when you are travelling? How about the ability to

 |
sort programs alphabetically |
| |
 |
mark multiple shows for deletion |
| |
 |
search and define programming choices |
| |
 |
add season passes |
| |
 |
and even modify show information and descriptions |
All of this functionality
is available to you using TiVoWeb. Is it difficult? Not at all! TiVoWeb runs
entirely from your web browser using an intuitive point-and-click interface.
Behold the power of your upgraded TiVo!
TiVoWebPlus is a killer-app for your TiVo. Once your TiVo is up and
running on your network, TiVoWebPlus is most likely to be your primary interface
into your TiVo from any other location than in front of your television. And most
importantly, you can access TiVoWebPlus and interact with your TiVo when someone
else is already in front of your TV. What can you do with TiVoWebPlus? Well, pretty
much anything you can do with a remote, and a whole lot more. Just a few of
the features include the ability to schedule recordings, browse, sort, mass
delete, and edit descriptions of the content listed in your "Now Playing"
list, schedule and reprioritize season passes, send messages, and the list
goes on and on and on. Even more interesting is that there are a variety of
TiVoWebPlus modules that have been developed by other folks that can also be installed
and used through the web interface.
TiVoWebPlus is not a product we've developed at DVRupgrade. It is a free and unsupported software package released under the GPL, and we've incorporated it,
made a few customizations, and also added a few popular modules that we think
folks will find useful.
Here is a link to the
TiVoWebPlus home page where you can find some technical details about TiVoWebPlus.
PTVnet Replacement Drive Kits are configured to automatically
detect your home network settings using DHCP; if you have a DHCP-enabled router
system which acts as a firewall and allows
you to share your high-speed Cable or DSL connection among several computers
in your home, then a TiVo DVR configured with PTVnet will work great in your
environment. Once your TiVo DVR is set up in your environment and configured
on your network, you can always change your TiVo's IP address to one that is
static if you want.
Absolutely. We offer a pre-configured 802.11g wireless bridge as an accessory to your DVRupgrade TiVo upgrade kit; simply install the kit in your TiVo, connect your wired Ethernet adapter into the wireless bridge. WEP 64-bit and 128-bit encryption is fully supported! Since your TiVo Series2 DVR has a USB port on the back, not a standard Ethernet connection, you'll also need a USB/Ethernet adapter which you can also purchase at checkout (we highly recommend you purchase one through us as they are known to work). FYI, the reason we recommend the wireless bridge, in combination with a wired USB/Ethernet adapter is so that you can run WEP in your environment. Typically USB/Wireless network adapters can only run WEP when connected to a host computer running additional software, and this is not the case with your TiVo.
These are the units currently supported by PTVnet; if its NOT on the list then it is NOT supported!

This is something we do not support at DVRupgrade due to concerns by TiVo and the possibility of illicit redistribution of content. We know our customers well enough to know they don't do that sort of thing, but with that said, we don't want to get mixed up with it, either. If you are interested in archiving recorded content from your TiVo to your PC, we recommend you consider a newer 'standalone' TiVo, such as the TiVo HD. This can be used with the TiVo Desktop (a free TiVo product) to move non-copy protected content to your PC for viewing on your desktop. Unfortunately, units such as the TiVo HD do not support DIRECTV.
Yes, we are compiling a FAQ here in our support
center, in addition, if you have product questions or are looking to discuss
anything, we highly recommend you check out DVRplayground and TiVoCommunity.
Just head to our front page, or click on the NETWORKING menu on the top of the screen. If you haven't done so already, select the make and model of TiVo DVR you have, and in the category pulldown, ensure that NETWORKING is selected. Click on the blue circle (with the triangle in it) and the replacement drive kits available for your unit will be displayed. Ensure that you select the PTVnet Bundle and then use the buy now button to add it to your cart.
You will also need a USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter and we recommend that you purchase this from us. They are available in the accessories section of our web site. You can also choose a wireless gaming adapter which can be used in conjunction with the USB 2.0 Ethernet adapter. This is the only way to have wireless connectivity - ie you cannot use a USB wireless adapter.
All PTVnet replacement drive kits are fully supported under the
DVRupgrade standard six-month warranty. But, we should also mention that software updates from
TiVo or DirecTV may overwrite any changes or modifications made to your to systems
primary software. PTVnet kits are configured so that your unit is not required
to make a daily phone call and will not automatically receive software updates
from DirecTV or TiVo, however at any time you can easily enable your unit so
that it receives and processes software updates. It is important to us that
we not stand in between you and DirecTV and TiVo, however we give you control
of when these updates can occur. Our warranty is explained in more detail here.
