NetReady Core Utils and TiVoWeb Installation

Preparation

Download and install the core utilities and apps locally on your system. If you've been sent to this page via the installer, then you've already done so! Latest version available here:

DVRupgrade NetReady Download Page

We strongly recommend you use the default directories specified by the installer, that way all examples will be as close to realistic as possible.

Unlocking Your NetReady TiVo

Your NetReady replacement drive from DVRupgrade has been secured on your network and needs to be 'unlocked' before any of our TurboNet bundles can be remotely installed on them. The first step is to unlock your drive by moving the appropriate file to your TiVo, once its plugged into your network and accessible from your PC. The unlock file needs to be moved to the TiVo using FTP and there are a variety of ways to do this. If you are an advanced user, and already have an ftp program installed on your PC, you can skip the next few steps or do them in your own way. In either case, you will need the IP address of the TiVo on your network. If you are uncertain of your TiVo IP address, use the following tutorial, Locating your Networked TiVo.

If your TiVo is already unlocked, and you are going to install (or re-install) your DVRupgrade Core Utilities and TiVoWeb, you can proceed directly to the installation page.

Using Command Line FTP to Move the Unlock File to Your TiVo.

From the Start Menu, select Run and issue the ftp command with your IP address (example below):

An FTP session should open up and you can simply hit the ENTER key twice to log into your TiVo. Now you will need to issue several commands to prepare your FTP client and transfer the unlock file to your TiVo. The session is transcribed below, but here the commands in the order you should enter them:

1. lcd c:\PTVtemp (that is a lower-case "L" - you are changing to the local directory on your PC where you unpacked the install files.)

2. binary (this tells FTP to move the file as a binary file, not a text file; this is an optional step in this case, but most files do need to be moved as binary files so we'd like you to get into the habit of doing this)

3. cd /var (this changes the directory on the TiVo accordingly - note the difference between "/" and "\" and use the appropriate ones when directed!)

4. send .NETREADY (this actually sends the file to your TiVo)

Please see the transcript below. If you receive any errors, then you've typed something incorrectly or omitted a step.

Now you will need to restart your unit. We highly recommend you do this using the RESTART RECORDER selection which can be found System Reset menu on your TiVo.

Using the Windows File Manager to Move the Unlock File to Your TiVo

Use your Windows File Manager or Windows Explorer to navigate to the directory where you unpacked your NetReady files, and go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options. Then select the View tab and ensure that Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.

Using the right mouse button, first select the ftp-session1 icon with the right mouse button and when the menu pops up, select properties. Change the IP address in the appropriate field to your local IP address, but be sure to leave the remainder of the URL intact. Do the same for the ftp-session2 and telnet-session icons, you will need these later.

Double-click on the ftp-session1 icon which will open a new browser window. Now open the install folder (default is C:\PTVtemp) and copy the .NETREADY file into the window you opened. (It should be copied into the /var directory on the TiVo).

Now you will need to restart your unit. We highly recommend you do this using the RESTART RECORDER selection which can be found System Reset menu on your TiVo.
