As mentioned in their FAQ, VUDU uses technology developed over the past 2 1/2 years to deliver movies instantly over the Internet directly to your TV. VUDU employs a unique distributed network model that enables cost-effective and efficient delivery of movies to each home. In addition, VUDU pre-positions content across the network and caches previews and meta-data on each box to create a seamless and instant viewing experience. This technology is not comparable to anything available in today's market from ANY other vendor or service provider. It is unique to VUDU and it WORKS!

Once you've set it up, the VUDU product is amazingly simple to use. Unless you have a problem with the hardware, its unlikely you'll need any support at all. If you are having a problem or suspect the unit you received is defective, it does have a one-year parts and labor warranty. Please feel free to contact us directly if your product needs to be replaced.

Here are some of the commonly asked questions and answers about the VUDU product. A more complete knowledgebase of information exists on the VUDU support website, as well.

Do I pay a monthly fee? How does billing work? There are no monthly fees. You pay for content as you go. Our billing functions in the following way: When setting up your account, you provide a credit card and choose an amount ($20, $50, or $100 with $20 being the default amount) to charge the card and create a positive balance in the account. As you rent or purchase movies, the per-movie viewing charges will be debited from your VUDU account. When your account depletes to $0.00, the pre-selected amount is charged to your credit card and the account is replenished.

Does VUDU work wirelessly? The VUDU box itself is not wireless, but you can plug the box into any number of Ethernet or game adapters to connect it to your wireless network. We recommend 802.11G minimum. Wireless performance may vary based on environmental factors specific to each home—distance from the router, building materials, and proximity to microwaves. Regardless of what sort of connection you use, VUDU requires a broadband Internet speed of 2.0 Mbps for instant viewing of movies.

What kind of Internet connection do I need to have? Your Internet connection is vital to your VUDU experience. VUDU requires a minimum of 2.2 Mbps (usually advertised as 3 Mbps) for instant viewing. While a slower connection is sufficient for delayed viewing—1.2 Mbps (1.5 advertised), we recommend upgrading if possible to get the most out of VUDU. Both DSL and cable modem high-speed services can provide sufficient bandwidth to support the VUDU service. If you're not sure about the speed of your Internet connection, you can access a bandwidth test on any page of VUDU's website.

How much does VUDU cost? The VUDU box costs $295.00. Rentals range from $0.99 to $3.99 (some are even FREE!), and purchased movies range from $4.99 to $19.99.

Do I need a computer to get movies from VUDU? No. VUDU uses an Internet connection to deliver movies straight to your television. The only requirements for use of the VUDU service are the VUDU box, a television, a high-speed broadband Internet connection, and an active account. The only time you'll need a computer is to activate your account online.

Can I buy movies or only rent them? VUDU's agreements with studios dictate on a case-by-case basis whether a film is available for rental, purchase, or both. Most often, you can do either. If you purchase a movie, it will be stored permanently on your box. If you rent a movie, it remains on the box unwatched for 30 days. Once you press play, a 24-hour viewing period is initiated, after which your rental will expire. Within that 24 hours, you can watch the movie as often as you wish.

What kind of TV do I need to have? VUDU isn't picky. While we recommend pairing VUDU with a high-definition or enhanced definition television (in widescreen or fullscreen format), VUDU will work with any standard definition television, as well (in widescreen or fullscreen format). VUDU's proprietary encoding, decoding, and up-converting technology enables HD TV's to show off their best audio and video capabilities.

Does VUDU have high-def content? The VUDU hardware is capable of displaying HD content. As soon as we receive high-definition titles from our studio partners, we will be ready to deliver them to our customers.  This process has already begun - there are several HD titles currently available, and at CES 2008, announcements were made, discussing the addition of over 70 high-definition feature films (with more coming!)

When will VUDU get new releases? Generally, VUDU gets movies at the same time that their DVDs are released; however, this is determined by the studios on a title-by-title basis. Sometimes, there might be a short gap (1 to 5 days) between the DVD release and the film appearing on your VUDU box, depending on the VUDU box update schedule. At the DVD release, you may purchase the movie on VUDU.

Is there a way to burn movies onto disks? At this time, VUDU's agreements with the studios do not allow for the export of purchased movies onto an external DVD-burner. However, nothing stops consumers from connecting the box to another TV within their home or in a different house. Even if you don't have access to the Internet at this new location, all movies previously stored on the box will be viewable.

What video resolutions does VUDU support? 1080p/24, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i

How do I install my VUDU device? Please refer to the Quick-start Guide, included in the packaging of the box, or the User Guide, available and downloadable from the VUDU website.

What Internet connection does VUDU recommend? Both DSL and cable modem high-speed services can provide sufficient bandwidth to support VUDU under the right conditions. If you’re not sure about the speed of your Internet connection, you can access a bandwidth test on any page of VUDU’s website.

Will I be required to upgrade my broadband service in the future? No, you should not have to upgrade, provided your existing broadband Internet connection ensures a 2.0 Megabit per second download speed.

Can I use the VUDU box and service in a different country? No, not at this time. The VUDU service is only available in the United States.
