Use this topic area to discuss DIY software products such as InstantCake, PTVnet, boot CD products, The Slicer or older Series1 utilities such as NetReady,and DVRchive. This is also a great place to discuss many of the 3rd party modifications such as TiVoWebPlus, the Zipper, Hackman, etc. Official discussion threads for InstantCake and PTVnet can be found here.

These are the original TiVo units offered by Philips, Sony and Hughes. The easiest way to tell whether or not you have a Series1 is to look on the back; these units do not have a USB port (or an Ethernet connector). Standalone units are the ones that work with your cable, or an external box for cable or satellite. DirecTiVo units have built-in DirecTV and require a subscription with DirecTV. Discussion of upgrades, software mods, TurboNet, and CacheCard adapters is welcome here.

These are the second generation of standalone TiVo DVR systems . Most of these units were marketed under the TiVo brand name, however, not all of them. All of these units have a USB port on the rear panel. Series2 standalone units work with cable and can also be used with an external cable or satellite box. Some Series2 standalone systems have a built in DVD drive, as well. Discussion of upgrades and software mods is welcome here.

These are the second generation of TiVo DVR systems which contain integrated tuners designed to work with DirecTV. All of these units have a USB port on the rear panel, however DirecTV never enabled them. Series2 DirecTiVo units have built-in DirecTV tuners and require a subscription with DirecTV. These are the current generation of TiVo units designed for use with OTA HD broadcast and high-definition CableCARDs supported by many regional cable providers. Discussion of upgrades, adding drives and software mods is welcome here.
