Why is it my Tivo responds perfectly to its IP Address but not to its name? Using Netgear FVS318 firewall router. Is it because of name length? I don't understand the smiley faces they just appeared.

That's a function of the PC you are using. You need to edit your hosts file to map whatever name you choose to the IP address of it on your network. The name you see on your router is just the dhcp-client name, and has nothing to do with what your computer sees (which right now, is just the ip address)...
