Could someone (Bud) tell me if a DTV Hughes model SD-DVR80 is the same as a DTV Hughes HDVR2.
Are they both series 2 units? They sure looh the same in every way......
What software do you use for each of these units to "Bake a Cake"
Would I need Instacake 6.4 for both units or is there speicific software for each individual DVR?
I upgraded a unit a while back and it worked great.....
Thanks

This units are not exactly the same as each of them does have a slight difference in hardware (and hence, software). Although some have reported that the same software can be used on both of these units, even with the minor difference, as a matter of good practice you should use the correct version for each of them.
Specifically, use InstantCake for the HDVR2 for your HDVR2 and use InstantCake for the SD-DVR80 for the SD-DVR80.

I used IC for HDVR2 on both my HDVR2 and SD DVR40 units and it works just fine. I don't know if the it would work the other way around. Hope this tid bit helps.

Please don't do that. This was brought up over 8 years ago on the TiVo forums (tivocommunity.com) and nothing has changed since -- it is not appropriate to install the software designed for one unit on another.

Lou,
I purchased IC 6.4 which I downloaded. I'm not trying to be dumb, but what software versions other than IC 6.4 do you use for service 151 and service 351? I have one HDVR2 which uses 151, one HDVR2 that uses 351 and a third unit which is a SD DVR40 which uses 151 on it. Is there something I am missing here?
I took the working Maxtor 40gb HD's out of one HDVR2 w/151 and one SD DVR40 w/151. I put two used 80gb HD's in loading IC 6.4 - both units booted and worked fine. I have the remaining HDVR2 w/351 on it, can I use the IS 6.4 for this one too? I want to update that HD too. Any thoughts??

Here is a link to our TiVo model finder (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/comparison_chart.cfm) page.
Note that the first three digits of the service ID are the identifiers for the the model type. So, HDVR == 151, and Hughes SD-DVR models == 351.
There is a version of InstantCake for the HDVR2, and there is a different version for the Hughes SD-DVR models because those model numbers are different.
Some say that the software, when it changed from 6.2 --> 6.4 may have merged, however the standing recommendation is to use the correct version of the software for the particular unit in question.
Whether the software "works" or not is not the issue.
Years ago, it was discovered that software from the Philips HDR units "worked" on Sony SVR-2000 units. Until they realized that it didn't work and it caused problems on TiVo's servers. This caused concern at TiVo and was the impetus for some very famous posts at TCF (search for "Don't be a moron...") authored by a quite notable TiVo employee.
We want to ensure problems like that do not happen EVER. All it does is make TiVo (and DIRECTV think twice about whether the upgrade community should be tolerated or not).
So... the standing recommendation is use the right software on the right unit...
And naturally, we would prefer that folks purchase a copy of InstantCake for each unit they wish to upgrade, after all, each time you use the software, you are saving the cost of purchasing a kit.
Thanks,
Lou

Lou, Thanks for getting back to me on this topic.( Start of thread) I was just trying to save a buck....I already bought software for the HDVR2 and it worked great. I got the SD-DVR80 for 20 bucks and it works fine.(after a $20.00 card from Dtv)I guess when I upgrade the SD-DVR80 to an SD-DVR 500, I should do the right thing and load the right software.....I do not use TEVO per say. I never plug in my box to the phone lines. I just record shows I want,( I turn off suggestions all together...) But I guess that dose not matter. You have stated that the are software differences so I will stick with the program and do the right thing.... Are stating that there is specific software versions for every unit or groups of units. Is there an area inside the forms that discuss this topic.
Also is there an area in the forums that discusses purchases for PPV and how DTV stores their billing info for PPV onthet HD. The rep. from DTV was adamant tha the PPV history was stored on the HD. Which brings the next topic............Could one delete PVV. after the fact..
Thanks for all you do...
