View Full Version : USB NIC works, gets IP, but FTP, Telnet, etc... doesn't work

I have a Philips 704 DVR, which I had upgraded to a 160 gig drive about a year ago and just recently upgraded to a 500 gig drive. I also had a failed power supply and while searching for a place to buy one, I ran into this site. I read up on PTVnet and decided to give it a try. So much emphasis on how easy it was I said what the hell and gave it a try. OK, I don't know what's up, but this software has some bugs and I've searched the forums and can't find anything to help me aside from fixing the first problem which was that it has some bug where it fails at making it's own directories. I had to create some directories because it kept failing trying to set the flags as the directories didn't exist which is strange because it was it's own directories that didn't exist on the drive. I was able to find posts about people complaining about this error so I'm not alone. My issue now is that I have the USB drivers working and my USB NIC is also working and retrieving an IP over DHCP. I can even ping it fine, but none of the added services are working (FTP, Telnet, that Tivo Web thing, etc...) I believe it's all related to it somewhere failing to create directories and I imagine that just how it wasn't able to create the directories for the flags, it probably isn't able to create the directories for the actual services it's adding. Anyways, hopefully someone here can't tell me what's going on and how to fix this.

Its actually not a bug... if the directories can't be created its because the drive is not configured as you think it is. And if the directories aren't created, it means the software is not being installed/configured properly, so there is not reason that you should expect telnet, ftp, or TiVoWebPlus to work.
Ensure you know how the drive is connected and that you've specified the device name properly (eg, if your drive is connected as the secondary master, it will be /dev/hdc) and things will work fine. Once the software is installed correctly, everything will be as expected!
Others have made the same mistake and most figure out and once they have the correct information about their PCs, they are able to specify the drive configuration correctly.
Remember, when doing a DIY project, its always best to assume you are the one making the mistake -- if you do, it will be much easier to find the answers to your questions!

Possibly, except for one fact. When I created the directories as suggested in the message I found, it stopped reporting the error and was able to create the flags.

Yeah, I know exactly how I connected the drives. Secondary Master /dev/hdc and I was able to confirm it when the device list flew by.

Yeah, this isn't my first DIY project.
Please read my detailed message again. I was pretty clear on stating that this isn't the first time I've upgraded my Tivo. I also stated that the errors with the flags went away as soon as I created the directories, which shows that I did in fact state the correct device as it was able to create the flags, but only after I manually created the directories myself. I also stated that the NIC was working and getting an IP so obviously the software was at least able to enable the drivers for the USB NIC which leads me to believe that I did in fact specify the correct device.
So based on my clarification, what else could it be?
Thank you,
Adrian

Thank you,
Adrian
Would need more details to narrow it down:
1) how did you create 500GB drive that you used with PTVnet -- MFStools? InstantCake? Some other method?
2) what version of the software was running on the when you performed the install of PTVnet?
3) did you use the "PTVnet debug" option when running the script to give you a more verbose output of what was going on during the install process? if so, please provide those details, if not please try it again and provide them
4) what was the configuration of the PC? specifically, how was your CD drive connected (and how many do you have?) and any other drives or devices plugged in
All of these things are factors, and without knowing the details and actually witnessing the installation, I have no way to tell you what specifically happened - I can only go by the most common mistakes and how to avoid them.
If you can give me enough information so that we can replicate the problem, then we can look into it further.

Ok....please enlighten us on how to turn up the verbosity of PTVnet to see what in the world it is doing.
I am having issues similar to Adrian's.
