View Full Version : Nightly re-boot after 6.3e

After I upgraded my hacked HR10-250 to 6.3e using the Slicer, it started re-booting nightly.
Since I have upgraded it from 3.1.5f, to 6.3c, 6,3d and then 6,3e, it seems unlikely that there is any disk problems in either of the partitions where each new version of the software is stored. Although, I suppose that the new version could be enough larger to need some sectors, which were not previously used.
In prior versions, whenever the Last Status under System Information showed "Pending restart", I could telnet to the box and run fakecall.tcl which would remove the "Pending restart".
Is there a new version of fakecall.tcl that I need to download?

Most unfortunate Bruce, I feel for you. I have 2 Series 2 DirecTv units (Samsung 4080R and Phillips DSR708) Both of which have had daily reboots since the last update 6.3e.
I'm going to replace the drive in one of the units first, but doubt I'll let it upgrade the software. As long as the 6.1a that is on the drive gives me no problems, I'll stick with it until I see a fix or another update that addresses this issue. I'm going with the hard drive because I feel I have to, but I'll not tempt fate unless I must.
I would believe that maybe one might cause problems, but two different units from two different manufacturers, I have a hard time swallowing. I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place right now. I have the DirecTv service plan, but all they want me to do is turn in the unit I own and then lease their unit for an additional $5 month with a 2 year commitment. Even with the service plan this is what they are trying to shove down my throat. I can either go that route, which I seen to many complaints about DTV's new DVR units or just give up and switch to Comcast......which I really don't want to do.
I surely hope you have better luck then myself.:(

Why do folks upgrade to 6.3e... if it's not broken, why fix it, right? Can't the DVRs just be left at previous software releases?

Can't the DVRs just be left at previous software releases? if you use the current release of Instantcake and buy PTVnet along with it , it is possible to not connect the phone after the initial Tivo setup. That way you will go back to 6.2a and have everything working and it will not upgrade unless you reconnect the phone line. If you want to order Pay per View all you have to do is sign up and order it through Directv's Website.

Regular DirecTv users like myself who never had any problems before and just kept everything hooked up really didn't have any choice but to upgrade, it was done automatically by DirecTv/Tivo.

Ahhh, I guess I just figured since this is DVRUpgrade's forums that users here would be
more or less those who have modified/hacked their units.
That sucks for current HR10-250 users who haven't touched their boxes - the reboots would
not be a good thing. Maybe they're trying to 'encourage' folks to upgrade to the HR20's...
I've got 2 Directv R10's, both of which have had problems with 6.3e. Lots of lock-ups with frozen picture and no response to any controls. First occurrences locked exact same image on both. Had to power cycle to reboot. This occurred about once/week on both units. After a few reboots, one of the boxes went into satellite setup. It correctly indicated signal strength of sat but was unable to get info from sat. Since there's no way out of setup and more reboots will now always return to this spot I've got a couple of paperweight (or bookends depending on my needs). While diagnosing with tech support, they had me swap units and run the second unit through setup. It too is stuck in setup now. I'm going to try InstantCake to get back to a stable s/w version and unplug the phone line to stop updates from magically occurring !

This is what I would recommend to anyone having problems with 6.3 on these units.
