I have an R10 with a bad card reader. I would like to take the hard disk in the bad R10 and use it as an add-on drive in another R10, thus preserving the recordings from the hard disk in the bad R10. Is that possible? If so, how do I do that? If not, how can I transfer the recordings from the R10 with the bad card reader to another R10?

Sorry It is encrypted unless you had used Instantcake with PVTnet to create the disk. If you use them to create the new system then i believe you could move them together in the future.

Thanks Richard,
Can I just take the hard disk from the bad R10 and use it to replace the hard disk in a good R10?

whoa... that is not the case. first of all, PTVnet is not available for the R10... secondly, our products do NOTHING to disable the encryption which protects the video content on these drives. Have to be VERY clear about that because TiVo made it clear to us many years ago that disabling encryption is something that they do NOT want us doing.
not trying to slap you RT, just want to make sure noone infers the wrong thing from your post, but all in all, don't worry about it.

You can, assuming there is nothing wrong with the drive. You cannot use it as an add-on drive, however - unless you modify it, and the drive in your other R10 so that they will work together. You will not be able to preserve the content on the drive you'd be moving over, though.
If you want to move the drive over to the other unit, you can do that, but after you install it, you will get a "hardware error" message - simply ignore that and then do a "clear and delete everything" from the system reset menu. This will delete everything on the drive and throw you back into guided setup. Then everything should work, moving forward.
Keep your old R10 drive as a 'backup' in case the one you move over fails down the road.
