HR10-250:
So from what I've read PTVNet and InstantCake isn't quite enough?
What else is needed after those two steps? A script to turn off encryption and a script (scheduled) for fakecall so it doesn't nag you?
Anything else or does PTVNet take care of those extra steps already?
I'm coming from an HDVR2 where I ran PTVNet and InstantCake and everything worked great with Ty Tool and my Netgear USB 2.0 adapter with just those two discs from this site.

I had bought Instacake a like time ago when I had a phone line. Now that I don't have a phone like I bought PTVnet and ran the installation. Instacake still works, but I could never get my PTVnet working. Its a bloody shame too. That was a waste of $20

That was a waste of $20 When you purchased PYVnet did you specify which version of Instantcake you would be running it with? They have different versions of PTVnet and Instantcake. If you want to run them togather you should buy them togather. All of mine have worked fine.

Oh, PTVNet and InstantCake worked fine for me... my question is whether or not there is
anything else after that - ie, are the recordings still encrypted, does it nag you about
making a phone call, etc, etc... or are those just issues with folks who don't use PTVNet?

In addition to ensuring you purchased the correct version, consult the Official PTVnet Discussion Thread (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17); perhaps your unit has updated since you installed InstantCake and the "force" option is required?

I got Instacake DSR704 6.2 IC and my PTVnet is 6.2 I tried installing the PTVnet and it didn't work. I started from scratch using the PTVnet disk first and wiping everything off of the drive. Nothing. I even went in and got a bash prompt and made sure that the drivers are loading right. They where loading, but I was not getting the nice little PTVnet logo during load up. I really wished it worked because I spent a lot of money on that linksys adapter. Shame!:(

What is the make/model of adapter you are using, and what type of router do you have?
How did you get your bash prompt, through the serial connection? Did you try typing "ifconfig" to see if your router gave you an IP address?
Are you aware of the fact there is no "PTVnet logo" during start up? Do you mean the DVRupgrade "splash screen" that is black and red?

I did get the bash prompt through a serial connection. I have tried three different USB adapters all that are said to be ones that can be used. Two different Linksys and one Dlink. Right. I was talking about the splash screen. I have found out that once PTVnet is installed that there is that splash screen. Well I don't get that... It loads up like normal. Even with a clean install PTVnet doesn't work. Oh and I still get the Nags about not making a daily call. I think that I am about to hit 1000 (Do I through a big party when it hits 1000, I am not sure?)

Yeah, found that out... and if I get bored I may post my steps I went through after
ptvnet/instantcake 6.3 combo to get to where I am - since for some unknown reason,
there isn't a straightforward step-by-step guide out there... just multiple threads to
piece together.

Any luck on that step by step? I finished my PTV Net/Instant Cake upgrade and I can Telnet in and access through TWP. I even got in through bash, but I'm not sure what else I can do.
I'd like to get the 30 second skip permenantly set or maybe install the enhancement script from the Zipper folks, but I'm kinda lost on how to do either of those.

That thread assumes that the tweak is already on the TiVo. I used PTVNet so I need to know how to get tweak.sh over to the TiVo.

Anyone have a new drive with the ptvnet software that failsl to make a fake call, even tho that it what it's supposed to be setup to do? I just noticed this today when I was looking thru tivoweb 2.0 info. It says that the daily call failed and lists a time when it will try again...strange.

Not really so strange. PTVnet drives aren't really setup to make a fake call. They are set up to trick the system into thinking it made a call. The way this works is that there is a process, that is told to run periodically, starting at the time the system boots up. When the process runs, it writes into the database on the unit to update the time it thinks it made a call. If your unit actually attempts to make a call in between the times that the process runs, or if the process somehow dies (this can happen), the unit will eventually display that message (and it might even nag you).
The easiest way to "fix" the "problem" is to reboot the unit (use the remote, don't pull the plug) and chances are that the message be updated with a more current date. Its also possible that is may just "fix" itself.
It is for these reasons that you should still leave the dialing prefix as "*#" so that if the unit does, in fact, attempt to call out and the phone line is connected, it won't succeed...

Wow, thanks for the answer!
I guess I'm just paranoid because the entire reason I upgraded my hd was because on my original samsung ditvo unit, it would actually reboot itself a few times every week or so if it didn't make a daily call past 30 days. Guess it was somehow custom programmed in.

That seems really strange. No reason why that should ever happen if you are only using our stuff...

Yah, it was a pain. After 30 days of no calls (i got skype), it actually disabled the tivo service on its own! I had to call directv to turn it back on. Then after that point, it would reboot like clock work 10-15 minutes after the daily call failed.
That's why I decided to go with dvr upgrade and kill two birds with one stone. Now I got networking abilities and more storage space.
