I have a five year old Toshiba RS-TX-20 with lifetime basic TiVo service. The unit had a few issues in its early life and was repaired by Toshiba under the warranty. It's worked perfectly since then.
Last night, the unit somehow lost the ability to translate/output the audio and video signal coming in from the cable. On Live TV, I have a silent, black screen. If I go to TiVo Central, I can watch DVDs or pre-recorded shows without any problems, but if I try to record new shows, it records only a black screen. The unit seems to recognize that it is receiving a cable signal--it knows when the cable is unplugged--but something is wrong with the audio/video output.
The unit has been connected to a cable box for the last year or so (cable in to cable box, then to TiVo, then to TV). I know that the problem is not with the cables, because I used the same cables to connect the cable box directly to the TV, and everything worked fine.
Basically, the TiVo has perfect functionality--it will let me pause and rewind the black screen, and shows the correct guide, and TiVo Central works fine--except that it is not displaying or recording live TV.
Please help! My cable company is evil and I really don't want to have to get DVR from them.
