I have a hacked, instacak and PTVnet, dvr39 that seem to have died. I also have access to a DVR40 that a friend is no longer using. Can I put my larger, hacked hard drive from my DVR 39 into the other DVR 40? If not can I used my copies of instacake and PTVnet for the DVR39 and redo the larger drive for the DVR40?

No, you can't. These units are different from one another (check the service ID's and you'll see that the first 3-digits are different...

At the current cost of drives I would buy a 250GB Western Digital drive such as WD2500JB and use your Instantcake on that. Good luck. change the 2032 battery on the motherboard when you change the drive.:)

Lou, I only purchased instant cake for the DVR39 from you at the beginning of september and then the motherboard on my dvr39 died. Is it possible since this unit is no longer functioning that I could use my remaining downloads to download instant cake for the
DVR40. I am not trying to upgrade multiple dvrs with this one purchase, I just want to get one that will function. Thanks,
Bob

The difference between the Motherboards is the DVR39 is pre RID while the DVR40 is an RID motherboard. The chip U36 on the RID motherboard is what provides the Receiver ID hence RID chip. Each of these chips is unique. It is part of Directv program to prevent theft of service. When they mate your access card to the RID chip and also to the software. If the software is then copied and provided to illegal copies they can trace where it originally came from through the RID. The DVR40 has this software which matches the hardware and software. The DVR39 does not. Is there a difference only Directv knows and they won't tell. The entire area could be NO OP coded or there could be something else in that location. Hence the difference in model numbers. If you use the DVR39 code on a DVR40 it may or may not work. The risk is yours. But remember there are a lot of unexplained happenings currently occurring in the TiVo dvr community, this may be one of the causes. :)
