What type of kit did you purchase? What type of unit do you have?

Thanks for the reply Lou Jacob, I bought " 311 Hour Replacement Drive Kit (250GB)
[SKU: S2R-250000-240] " and it is for a Standalone Tivo Series 2.
I emailed DVRupgrade whether the new hard drive has " Instantcake" on it, the reply I got was " " The drive is preconfigured for immediate installation into you unit. InstantCake is not part of the equation at all. "
I have sent 2 further emails but am getting no reply.
Thanks again.............................drummond

The kit you purchased is a replacement drive kit for your Series2 unit (TCD240). It has been pre-configured for installation in your unit.
InstantCake is a software tool which can be used to prepare a 'blank' drive for installation into your TiVo -- if you are using a pre-configured kit, there is no reason to use InstantCake, since the work that InstantCake does has already been done.
If you want to get a BASH prompt on your unit, either by using the serial connection, or by using a network connection (eg telnet), you'd need to install additional "hacks" on the drive. That is beyond the scope of what these kits are designed to do and we offer no services or software for making such modifications to the software on your unit.
The Slicer is a software tool for managing upgrades so that any modifications or hacks you've installed can be easily preserved while performing a software update your unit. The Slicer is intended to be for advanced users and you can read more about it in this article (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6).
You can read more about doing such things at TiVoCommunity (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb) or at DealDatabase (http://www.dealdatabase.com), these are non-trivial modifications and not for the faint of heart.
If installing and configuring the kinds of hacks you are interested in is something you want to pursue, you will definitely need to do your homework.
Again, these are considered to be non-trivial (even by the experts), so prepare to roll up your sleeves if you are planning on doing that...

Thanks for the reply again, do you think I can format this 250 Gig drive to install in my computer, as it seems as though it is out side my scope to get into this HD. Thanks Again........................Drummond

Why not install the drive into your TiVo and enjoy the benefits of what it is designed to do? Your kit will give you much greater capacity than what was originally included with your TiVo.
If you want to use the drive in your computer, you certainly can do that, if you prefer.

I thank you for all your help Lou, I am in Canada and cannot subscribe to Tivo and was hoping it would be an easy fix to use this with my Bell xpress Vu, it seems that it is not that simple, so I am going to give up. Again Thank you................drummond
