I am new to the forum but have been reading many of the posts to learn how to put a new drive in my Philips DSR704 DirecTV DVR. I see that one poster sternly corrected another about the word “Format” stating that InstantCake did not reformat anything. I find that curious. Does this mean that you cannot use a drive previously formatted with DOS (fat16 or 32) or NTFS?

I read the instructions to mean that the booting CDROM should be set as a SLAVE on the Primay IDE channel (IDE0) and the object drive(s) set as MASTER and SLAVE (if present) on the secondary channel (IDE1). Is this correct?

I am going to use the same size drive as the original. Is this a problem?

Thanks

it is only a problem with the 40GB drive. This is an upgrade program hence it must be larger than the original Dtivo drive. The secondary channel is used as the target channel. boot sequence can be set in bios as floppy,CDROM,Original Source Disk(which may or may not be present) with targets on the secondary channel. The major problem if it was formated with the original NTFS which put a marker on the boot track. If using an NTFS disk it should be formated first to remove the marker.

Be sure to read the release notes for the particular version of InstantCake you are using. Although the recommendation is primarily to use drives larger than your original, versions of InstantCake which are referenced as using "InstantCake 2" technology (eg. InstantCake for Series2 DirecTiVo units) do not require the use of a drive larger than the original.

Again, the details are in the release notes (and also on the CD, if you press the F1-F3 keys for help when prompted)...
