View Full Version : Can InstantCake revert back from 6.3e, and save my Tivo Programs?

I am a long time DTV R-10 Tivo user, and also left my phone line plugged in like many of the sheep, only to get the damn 6.3e upgrade freezing & rebooting bug 1-2 times per day for the last 1-2 weeks....but ONLY when one of the two tuners is set to a local NBC/CBS channel in Connecticut.
I have two brand new R-10 backups in the box with new sealed cards from when I saw the writing on the wall with the R-15 replacement on my service plan.
I just bought InstantCake, and have built my own PC's and upgraded several R-10's....but here are my questions as they relate to R-10's:
1) Is there a way to revert the 6.3e (crap) Tivo software back without removing my programs on the existing R-10 HD?
2) Is there any downside to using 6.1a which apparently InstantCake installs on R-10's?
3) Once I verify my account with phone line...is there any downside such as account suspension if I keep it disconnected afterwards? I never use PPV, and it appears that the R-10's do not allow USB networking anyway. As long as I can get my Season Pass and channel content, I'll be happy.
Many thanks in advance....and if I should have posted this in another area, I apologize.

Anyone know before I wipe out my shows? It's not in the documentation.

Anyone know before I wipe out my shows? It's not in the documentation. It depends on what you mean by revert back? Instantcake will install an earlier operating system ( 6.2a or whatever is appropriate for your system which I see is the R10) and you would continue forward from that point. Will it save your recorded shows? NO. Will it bring you back to a time when you were not having problems? Yes. Instantcake will be easy to install and will install very quickly. It will not save your shows or your season passes. Those you will have to rerecord. The good news is with Directv and Tivo that will happen very quickly. Remember it is the start of a new Tv season and the longer you wait the more you will miss. As long as the phone is unplugged you will not have to go through this for another 3 to 5 years if you buy a new hard drive. ( based on new drive manufactures expected life.) If you keep your old system who knows what the future will bring.( I am certainly no fortune teller) but Tivo has not yet released enough details on how their system stores files and if they can be recovered. The details that are currently available are as a results of hackers works. I only know you see some of the Greatest hackers hanging around the DVRupgrade community and if this problem is ever solved it will be solved here. I hope this answers your questions. There is no promise as to what the future will bring. But with DVRupgrade you have a chance of seeing it. Just to let you know I am in no way affiliated with DVRupgrade. I am just a happy customer as I am sure you will become if you buy the product. :)

If you just have to keep your shows, check out mfslive.org.
There are instructions on how to migrate shows from an old hard drive to a new one, but it doesn't look simple to me.

Yeah, I just wanted to know if I should copy some of my shows to DVD-RW before Caking the drive. It does not say in the instructions if it essentially does a low level or typical format where I would lose everything, or if it just replaces/installs the Tivo files.
But now I know that if I want to get rid of this horrible 6.3e, Cake can do that but at the expense of also losing my recorded shows and season passes. As long as I knew before switching around the IDE cables and starting this was my question.
Thanks for the additional information too! I had already bought Cake from here, and burned the ISO to CD.

For anyone reading my thread, and since none of the admins replied, and nothing about this is in the instrcutions for InstantCake....it does completely wipe out your hard drive, like a format...and you will lose all stored shows if you decide to use this utility.
That should be clearly stated in the instruction/help guide just so you know ahead of time....you may want to back up your stored shows to a DVR.

Yes it does Richard. Thanks. That should make the process a piece of cake. I'll report back with the results.

Here is another example of a post by someone who is to lazy to read, this is one post of many found by using the search for the word format. Nothing is hidden, there is no attempt to deceive, all you have to do is search for it. It is easy to criticize when you prefer to make up your own facts, so they will match your remarks. Please search before you comment. Fewer Mistakes.
