I have a Samsung S4120R on DirecTV and the hard disk crashed. I have a new DB35 160GB disk to replace it and want to build a new system disk. And I'd like to enable PTVnet while I am at it.

So it appears I need InstantCake and PTVnet CDs to do that.

Questions:

1) Is this right?

2) Do I also need the LBA84 CD?

I also have a second DVR - a Samsung S4040R and would like to enable PTVnet on it as well. It appears I need a different version of InstantCake for this model. I'll probably just put a 160GB disk in it as well.

Questions:

1) Is it correct that I need a different version of InstantCake for this model?

2) Can I use the same PTVnet CD from above?

Thanks in advance!

Since the service ID's of both of your Samsung units start with the same 3-digits, you do not need a different version of InstantCake for them. Technically, you should be purchasing a copy of PTVnet for each unit that that you install it on, but there is nothing to prevent you from doing it with just one copy.

So, basically all you need is (1) PTVnet and (1) InstantCake for the Samsung unit. Boot with the PTVnet CD, follow the prompts for inserting your InstantCake CD and you'll be fine.

You don't need the LBA48 CD because the kernel for the software that is part of the current TiVo OS already supports LBA48.

Also, make sure you run full diagnostics on your hard drive before using any of the DIY software tools.

InstantCake and PTVnet instructions are posted in the articles area (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12) of the forum.
