Here is the problem: can not get PTVnet to work.
I'm trying to upgrade DTV HDVR2:
- using DVRupgrade Seagate 250gig, DVRupgrade TrendNet adapter, DVRupgrade newest downloads of InstantCake & PTVnet.
- I had CD-ROM as Primary Slave (jumpered to slave) & Seagate as Secondary Master (jumpered to master)
- Booted with PTVnet, changed to InstantCake when instructed.
Set flag as directed All “yes” except phone (disabled) & network call (instead of phone call, disabled)
- Everything worked as advertised, baked cake, adapter lights on, etc.
-
- I have DSL and am using a LINKSYS router, when I did a DHCP Active IP Table, it did not show anything pertaining to a TiVo at all (no DVRugrade just IP address with no name). When I put the IP address that I thought was the Tivo I got nothing!!
What do I need to do???

If you received no errors or warnings when going through the PTVnet installation, and you chose the USB 2.0 drivers, then you are probably OK on the TiVo-side; hopefully you are using a compatible adapter (there are multiple Trendnet adapters, so you may want to check the list on that one...)
Beyond that, look for a problem on your network. Is your router configured so that it can hand out DHCP IP addresses? If the IP address isn't showing up in the client table, try using angry ip to scan your network and find the IP address.
Maybe reset any switches between your unit and the router, or better yet, just right a new cable to see if that is the issue (also try different ports, etc...).
Its always something simple; just a matter of eliminating the variables.

I did a reset, changed cables, I found an IP address (does not say TiVo but it was not there before I connected the adapter) but when I type the addy 192.168.2.etc into the browser(IE) I don't get anything but "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage "

If it responds to ping and your web browser still does not see TiVo webplus perhaps you have a bad motherboard on the TiVo. I had a bad motherboard that through off all communication with the serial port and both USB Ports. Replaced the motherboard with my only spare and now everything is fine.

It showed nothing! I even changed routers to a Linksys WRT300N and that did not help. Don't know what else to do.

using Trendnet TU2-ET100 version 3.0 purchased from DVRupgrade , all lights workingIt sounds like a bad motherboard, especially if it fails to respond to ping and you cannot locate the address of the TiVo on the router. I use the Netgear 318 and that gives me a list of every IP requested. Sorry no other thoughts on my part.

It can't respond to a ping because I have no IP address to ping. when I use angryIP or do a DHCP table on the router there is no IP for the TiVO shown. Is "Netgear 318" your router? I don't know enough about the Linksys 300N, it may have features avaiable that I am unaware of to use. thanks anyway for trying to help.

This was also true of my old Dlink DI-704P and SMC Barricade Plus routers. You can specify the DHCP address by entering the MAC address of the USB-NIC and specifying the DHCP address to be assigned to that MAC address. Read your manual and it will tell you how. Good luck.:)

Thanks Richard, I'll dig through the router manual and see if there is something I can get to work, again thanks for the reply.

*****IT IS WORKING!!! I have no idea why!!**** I just did a angryIP check, found a new IP address that was not there before, did a show on computer browser (http) and "TiVoWeb Plus" came up!!! The only thing that I can think of is that I did not touch anything for about 2 days after I baked the cake & added PTVnet & connected the Trendnet adapter and could not find any IP address for the DVRumgrade, and tonight it shows up!!?? Go figure. Thanks Lou and Richard for all you assisstance.
Yea! Yea! I don't want to mess this up, what should I NOT do!

I have had a Samsung SIR-S4040 for over two years now with the InstantCake 6.2 and PTVNEt 6.2. I have the DLink DUB-E100 adapter and all was working well until about two weeks ago. I though maybe the netowrk adapter or cable or switch went bad, but I have tested all separately and they work just fine. I thought maybe it was the PTVNet software so I upgraded it to 6.2.10, no dice. I thought maybe I had recieved a download via the satellite (as opposed o the phone line, since I've never plugged that in), nope. I have reimaged using the instancake and ptvnet software and still no network. I have link and activity lights on the adapter, but no dice on a network address when I do an IP scan or use my router's table to see which DHCP clients are there. In short I have tried every possible variable. DOes anyone know why it would suddenly stop working and why after a fresh start it wouldn't work either? I need some help!!!!
Thanks.

I have the identical issue on a hr10-250. I copied the original drive to another identically sized one using MFStools, then ran the appropriate PTVnet on the new drive with the -force option. Both times, the installation was successful and both times, the tu2-et100 comes up, get a link, then silently does nothing. The "both" refers to ptvnet running on by 6.3f and 6.4a versions of the software.
I'm running a linux router with dhcpd service and there's absolutely no DHCP coming across the link (i.e. no request at all). Does it take longer than 30 minutes for the TiVo to ask for the address the first time? This is pretty ridiculous and I'm getting sick of buying more and more versions of the PTVnet software just to have them not work. Is there any kind of diagnostics one can do without getting the USB networking functional first? I don't like the "shot in the dark" troubleshooting when everything I did should have worked.

It officially only supports Instantcake, nothing is said about mfstools. you don't even say which mfstools you are using and there are so many versions out there. You are hacking with an unknown unsupported product and you expect it to work?

Actually, it does. I paid for the download just yesterday:
http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/product1.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=781&Category_ID=5&page=prod&type=Model&ModelID=100
I didn't use mfstools in conjunction with ptvnet, I used it to make a duplicate of the original drive (you know, mfsbackup - | - mfsrestore). It was version 2.0, not that it matters since the new drive worked perfectly after making and exact duplicate of the original...
So, in summary, I'm simply using ptvnet on a copy of my unhacked original system image, which is 6.4a, which is supported....and as I mentioned, it did the exact same thing a month ago with 6.3f.

According to what I've posted above, Everything should be working.... but it's not. I let it sit over the weekend and it still hasn't asked for a lease (so there goes the "really long startup" theory). I know I have a TU2-ET100, but is there a chance that the hardware version is too new or other such weirdness?
I can try the linux kernel version from which the driver is derived on a PC-linux host if someone can tell me what version of the driver/hardware is supposed to work. I know DIY is supposed to be unsupported, but I did pay for it....twice.

I am able to get in via serial cable now and would like some confirmation of what I SHOULD be seeing. As a reminder, I'm using an HR10-250 with 6.4a and the 6.4x version of pvtnet.
When I look at the /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author file, There is a conditional block for DHCP, and for STATIC, the latter expecting variables to be defined somewhere in the code. I checked with lsmod and there's a usbnet driver running and ifconfig shows eth0 up and receiving packets (although it has no IP address. Where should the dhcp client binary be located with the version of code I'm running. I was only able to find one in /ptvnet/other_stuff/ (or something like that). There were also other dhcp-related configurations, etc. It's almost like a portion of the PTVNet code didn't execute and the system never had the network startup scripts moved to the right place. Could someone provide an "ls -laR" of their /etc filesystem after ptvnet has been applied so I know what it's supposed to look like?
Also, when connected to the serial, I get an error message about every 5 seconds regarding a memory address unlink error. It stops when I unplug the USB network adapter. Any ideas there?
Thanks.

So, I figured out why I got constant log messages when the USB e-net was plugged in:
- The USB kernel drivers were from the /ptvupgrade/modules/usb20/2.4.20/20060906 directory. I backed them up and copied over the ones from the /ptvupgrade/modules/usb20/2.4.20/currnet/ directory and the errors went away.
The next issue was that no IP was getting set. Well, this was easy once I looked at the init script. There was neither a "/init/ptv_flags/DHCP_ON" or a "/init/ptv_flags/STATIC_ON" file created as part of the PTVnet install.... After creating those files with the proper permissions and rebooting, the unit came up on the network.
Something that's still causing issues with file transfers and HME/HMO applications is that I'm getting exactly 50% packet loss. Anyone seen this before? Is it a speed/duplex issue and if so, how do you remedy it?
Dan
