I have one success upgrading a new drive in my DirecTV Tivo using InstaCake that went really well. Now I am trying to upgrade the drive in a Humax T800 Standalone Tivo unit using InstaCake. I trying to do this on a Maxtor 320gig hard drive. Everything is hooked up correctly and and the InstaCake software recognizes the Maxtor hard drive but ends up hanging with the last message "raw1394 /dev/raw1394 device initialized". Going back and looking at some of the messages I did see a message "HDC: Unknown Partition Table" also. The other strange thing is that I can boot to my old InstaCake CD for DirecTV Tivo and it doesn't have any issues with this drive. Does anyone have any ideas?

Could be a bad burn; possibly re-burning at a slower speed might make a difference. Could be a PC compatibility issue, as well (if you have a different PC, try booting on that one to see if its a problem. Also try disconnecting your hard drive and see if the CD boots. If it does, then it might be related to the new hard drive or the cable.

The trick is to eliminate as many variables as possible.

Also, if you haven't already, double-check the instructions and make sure your drive and CD jumpers are set correctly; strange things can happen when things are not connected as they should be...

I've tried reburning the ISO CD and got the same result. Then thinking that maybe the downloaded file might have been corrupted I downloaded the zip file again and burned another ISO CD and still the same result. I did have another computer but when I opened it up it only seems to have one controller for IDE drives which are being used for CD/DVD drives. The hard drive has the small plug interface so I'm not sure if that PC will work. So back to the original PC that I have been using. I've tried setting the new hard drive in both the Master and Cable Select but got the same result. I can go through and copy down all of the information on the screen if that would be helpful. But here's the thing that doesn't make sense to me. I can use my old DirecTv Instacake CD and it works great with this configuration. So it seems to me that rules out a bad cable or something being hooked up incorrectly. Also when I run the Humax ISO CD it seems to recognize the drive and shows it listed as hdc, so I'm still confused. Any other ideas? Thanks, Kurt

"1394" refers to firewire, if that helps at all. Do you have something plugged into a firewire port?

Thanks for the response. I don't have anything plugged into the fire wire port. It just doesn't make sense to me that this ISO CD for the Humax Standalone Tivo doesn't want to work but the DirecTV Instacake seems to work perfectly. Thanks again, still searching. -Kurt

You've mentioned this several times, but you've not yet mentioned the specific versions of InstantCake you are comparing; so I really can't comment, specifically. Its possible that the two versions you are comparing use a slightly different boot CD and one of them may be incompatible with your PC.

What you might want to do is try the steps mentioned in this thread (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14); what you'd be doing is downloading a version of our free lba48 CD and running a script from it, then supplying your InstantCake CD so that the correct TiVo image can be used.

Beyond that, the only other suggestion is that the media type you are burning to could be a problem (and/or the speed at which you are burning).

I got my hands on another old PC and everything ran exactly like it was supposed to. It is very strange to me since my last InstaCake for a DirecTv Tivo worked great on my original PC but not the Instacake for a Humax T800 Standalone Tivo. But I can't argue with success. Thanks for your support and for those others out there that might have strange things happen it is worth trying the process on another PC. --Kurt Wayne
