DirecTV TiVo Versions

I have been reading a number of forums and I gather that DirecTV TiVos can only be updated to 6.X versions. I am curious as to why. Is this a hardware limitation? Or does DirecTV need to integrate something into the software? Now that I have upgraded and networked my DirecTV TiVo, HME looks interesting. But I guess I will not be holding my breath...

BTW I upgraded an RCA DVR 40 with Instacake & PTVnet over the weekend. It worked great.

Directv TiVos are a different microprocessor and hence require different code. The TiVo is only updated when Directv pays for a update. The processor is a MIPS processor and is only used by directv. Hence the different version.:)
