Equipment:
RCA DVR40 ->
300G HD (via Instant Cake)
6.2x
Question:
This drive is nearly full. I have in hand a virgin 750G HD. Can any point me a t process to move the recordings from the 300G now in use to the 750G and go on with new available space?
Thoughts:
When I used Instant Cake (couple/3) years ago, all went smoothly until I put the HD into the DTVR where it took so long for the DTVR to boot, I started over. I had to allow 24 hours + for the DTVR to boot. At this point, I had no data (recordings/settings) but over the intervening time, I have had not problems.
So, 2 problems here.
- IC did not move the data
- If a 300G HD takes 24 hours + to 'cook', I am assuming that a 750G HD will take in excess of 60 hours to 'cook'.
Any help?

To comment on the first "problem" -- please understand that InstantCake is designed to create a new drive for your TiVo, NOT to copy content from an existing drive to a new one. That is the purpose of our GOLD installation, and is something you can select when purchasing one of our kits.
I can understand why you consider this to be a "problem" however using the product for something other than its designed (or expecting it to provide functionality beyond what its designed for) is something that should be kept in perspective. I'm just pointing that out because others may fall into that same trap, losing site of what it is InstantCake is designed to do.
As for a DIY method of accomplishing what needs to be done, please check out the resources, as RichardTravis mentions, at mfslive.org; there is a guide published there.
I'm going to move this posting over to the DIY software forum which is a better home for it...

My apologies. Your characterization is correct. I did not expect IC to provide data moving capability when I bought it.
The ONLY real problem that I had with IC was the time it took to complete once the new HD was installed in the DTVR and the unit was powered up. I hope current docs indicate more accurate times for this process.

Thanks so much for the quick response. I will give it a shot.

I've never heard of a situation where a unit, that was healthy, took more than a few minutes to boot. Can you be more specific about what was happening there?
