View Full Version : Use a upgraded HDD on other DSR704?

Was the hard drive I purchased here "paired" with the first unit I stuck it into?

Do I need to reformat the drive to use in another unit or just clear it using the tivo menus?

I recently upgraded to the 235 hour HDD for my Philips DSR04 and it works great, the hard drive does any way.

I was having bad pixelation on tuner 2. I've read around, re-ran cabling, have an amplifier, the old dual lnb, and good signal but I have never seen a solution to this other than switching to another unit.

So I ebayed and got another DSR704 for 37.01 + shipping and it seems to work fine so far (I have to get the dudes parental lock code to clear the shows off?).

So then I put my upgraded hard drive in to see if that would work, and I can only watch tv! I can't get into the recorded shows list (I only have a few hours worth so far).

I get a harware error (didn't write it down!) and the software asks to be restarted.
I was a little tierd last night after working all day then teaching a class until 8pm so I wasn't necessarily thinking the clearest. Just happy to eat pizza.
I didn't restart it, instead I put the old drive back in for now while I research the best thing to do, besides emailing the dude I bought it from to get his parental unlock code.

Again the questions:
Was the hard drive I purchased here "paired" with the first unit I stuck it into?
Do I need to reformat the drive to use in another unit or just clear it using the tivo menus?

Any expert advice is greatly appreciated.

Matt

Directv can turn off the parental lock code remotely contact them as long as you bought a new card they can clear the code. moving drives between boxes you must do a clear and delete everything. Each box is encrypted differently and clear and delete everything does the encryption. Good Luck :D

Thanks, I feel a little more positive that I won't have to send my new drive back to get redone.

I will try to clear the new drive after work and see if the size stays the same.

Well, DTV won't give me an override on the parental control until I have the new access card installed which means I can't do anything further until monday.

I even removed the battery off the main board and waited a while hoping it was like the cmos battery on a PC, though maybe there is a jumper I need to short to drain all the caps.

I'm not set up to hack the unit though I've tried some other things like randomly punch codes and start it up without the card - to no avail.

I think I read somewhere that the access code will also be on the old hard drive somewhere. I will take the old HDD to work with me tomorrow in case anyone can tell me where on the drive and how to read the data, should it be encrypted and defeatable, or not.
Funfun!

Just to follow up, everything worked out fine. I got the override code from the guy I bought it from and was able to wipe my new drive that had been in my other tivo. Then the access card showed up and now we're back in the normal routine....yay.
