Just got my PTVnet, Insta-cake yesterday. Went through the process of putting in a new HDD and building the new image. Got the ethernet and gaming adapter configured and everything worked great till I decided to see if the caller ID worked.

I plugged it into the phone line and not 30 min when I rebooted it after messing with TivoWeb it updated itself to 6.03e.

I know I told it not to make daily calls with the phone, but I think I said yes to doing them over the internet.

Assuming I stop telling it to make daily calls at all (easy enough, only ordered 1 pay per view in the last 6 years), will the HDVR2 present caller-id if I attach it to the phone line? Is there a specific set of settings that will enable it to work with caller ID and not try to call home?

I'm comfortable editing config files, installing software, etc... I just haven't been able to find a specifc answer to this question. If there's a FAQ, README, or other guide I should have read please slap me and point me to it.

Tough to say as I'd guess most people haven't tried it.

I'd suggest trying it; make sure you disable the daily call from both the phone AND the network... and see what happens.

Please document what you do and how it all works out - then the answer will live on these forums.

If its "article-worthy" we can move it into the "articles" area of the forums where it will get more visibility.

Good luck!

OK,

I found a solution. I'll bet there is an easier way to do this, but here's what I did:

1. Used PTVNet 6.2a + Instacake to create a new image. Specifically said no to making a network or daily call. Enabled Telnet and FTP.

2. Telnet over to the TiVo. renamed the existing TivoWebPlus directory to TivoWebPlus131.

3. Downloaded TivoWebPlus 2.00 from http://thomson.tivo.googlepages.com/TivoWebPlus and ftp'd it to the TiVo.

4. untarred the application to /ptvupgrade/TivoWebPlus (had to use rootwrite to be able to change anything).

5. Connected to the TivoWebPlus. Used the auto-update feature to get TivoWebPlus 2.1b (same website as 2.00)

6. Used the auto-update feature to get Hackman http://www.tivohackman.com/ installed.

7. Went to the Hackman screen, enabled both elseed and YAC Caller ID.

It all works now! I'll bet all I really needed to do was just enable elseed and YAC Caller ID but I couldn't figure out how to do that. Once I read that Hackman could do that for me (and that TivoWebPlus 2.00+ supports a dual-tuner DirectTiVo) I just decided to go this route.
