Hello I am a first timer here on the forum. Right now my only Tivo unit is an older R10 and I have a DirectTV HD DVR also. I like some things about each one and some things I also dislike on each but overall I think Tivo is the best overall way to go.
If anyone can answer a couple of questions for me I would appreciate it. I have seen several HD Tivo's advertised on ebay. Other than the account balance questions that could arise are there any other major drawbacks to purchasing a "good " used unit? My TV supports two HDMI inputs and I would like to add a HD Tivo and use the R10 in another room. I would like to increase the HD capacity on my present R10 and if I can get an affordable HD unit I would like to upgrade it also. I read on someones posting that the HD Tivo was MPEG-2 and everything on Direct was brodcast in MPEG-4 what does this mean to me as a watcher and in the future as far as compatibility? Also there is a site on ebay that shows the ability to network your Tivo and copy shows to the computer DVD burner is this possible? Also on this front is there a way to schedule shows remotely by network?
I have thought about building a HTPC to accomplish some of these tasks but I don't think there is any software that will work with Direct TV as far as scheduling shows etc. is there? My experience level is as follows I built the computer that I am using now but I consider that putting parts together not computer experience. I am lost when it comes to the programing end of things as in the registry and so forth. What I mean by this is I am comfotable with swapping HD's and setting up the slave, master setup to format the drives I can handle, but EPROM's and such I know nothing about so would I be able to perform these mods myself or would I be better off buying?
THANKS for any answers that anyone can provide.
Pete
