hello fellow DVR upgraders;

I am concerned that when I bake a new drive for my factory stock DRT800, then I will lose access to the latest TiVo "internet" accessable features: Universal Swivel Search, movie and TV episode downloads from Amazon Unbox, etc.

Currently my DRT800 has software version: 8.3-01-2-595

From reading the forum, I see that the ISO of InstantCake for my unit, only has software version: 7.2.0-01-2-595.

I looking at upgrading my 2 DRT800's with: Samsung SpinPoint T HD400LD HDD's.

Am I correct to understand, that once I bake & install my upgraded drives, then the DRT800 is "locked" in at the 7.2 software version? and will only accept programming guide info, not software updates?

Will I have to purchase "The Slicer" to allow further TiVo software updates?

thank you.

Nope, not correct at all! Once you bake and install your drives, your unit will automatically update to the latest version of the software available for it after a few daily calls.

InstantCake is not designed to block software updates, its only for expanding the recording capacity of your unit.

No problem at all. Good luck with the upgrade. If things go well, please post to the success stories (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13) thread; if not, just ask and hopefully a member of the community (or most likely, I) will respond.
