Hello:

I want to start by saying that I am a new user so I may be missing something or I may be making a stupid noob mistake anyway... this is my problem...

I have an HR10-250 from directTV that I recently upgraded with InstantCakeHD 6.3d Standard + PTVnetHD 6.3x; when I go to the "Now Playing List" on the main menu I am getting an error that says that there is a hardware problem with my device and that I should call directTV and report error #51.

Here is what I did...

I grabbed an old Maxtor 160gig HD set the jumper to Cable Select and proceded to do the installation.

I started with the PTV CD first, once it booted it asked me if I wanted to do the instantCake installation I said "yes", it installed the Instant Cake and then it went into the options of the PTVnetHD, I put YES on every option that I was asked.

I put the HD on the TiVo and did the Guided Setup, also twiked with the aspect ratio and other not so important options...

Once I go to try to record a program by pressing record it seems to do it, and in fact if you check in the "TO DO LIST" of the TiVo the programs appear there, however I get the error again if I press the LIST button on the remote...

The HD seems fine, however I reinstalled a DIFFERENT HD (Hitachi 120gig) and I get the same error...

also. when I watch something on the TV I can rewind and pause normally like there is no problem. so it seems to be something with the recording fuction...

PLS PLS PLS help

Regards,

E

No errors or warnings during the installation process? It sounds like a flag isn't being set correctly.

Make sure you are specifying your target drive correctly when you are running the install script; if you are not sure what it is, then don't use cable-select on your drive and make a note of which IDE controller you are using (primary or secondary)...

I tested a few different thing, reinstalled using leaving the Network and Phone calls flag ON and still came up with hardware issues...

I have set my HD to be a secondary master and my cd drive to Primary Slave. installation completed without any problems.

once I put the drive in the TiVO i got the same error.

after playing around i got it to work by doing a Clear and Delete everything on my box

my question...

Does this undo everything? do I have to run PTVnetHD 6.3x again? or do I just have to do that 1 phone call and everything works again (including the FTP, etc)

I am planing on redoing the installation tonight with the phone calls and network calls flag disabled and then doing the clear and delete everything procedure 1 last time...

but agian, does doing the clear and delete everything nulify the process or do the hacks still stay in the system?

Doing the C&D won't hurt anything.

The only flag that matters is the FIRSTTIME flag which will be automatically set to ON if you are using InstantCake in combination with PTVnet. All the other flags are set appropriately by default, regardless of whether you've set your drive specifications correctly.

My guess is that you did get an error or warning during the installation process and that is why the FIRSTTIME flag was not set and you had a problem.

Rerun everything the SAME way you did the first time, and see if you get any errors or warnings and that will tell the story.

Also at the end of the installation, all the flag settings will be displayed, make a note of what they are and that will also provide more information.

Ok, at this point I have done the reinstall a few times, every time getting the same error.

Like I mentioned before I am doing the installation via the PTVnetHD 6.3x CD FIRST and then I am inserting the InstantCake CD when prompted.

I am on the middle of 1 more installation, this time I will set all the FLAGS to YES when prompted.

-- here are the FLAG status --

Call_Off
Firsttime_On
FTP_on
IC2_off
Network_call_off
Telnet_on
Tivoweb_on
Upgrade_off

-------

If I continue to have the same error I will do a C&D... ill post with more info as I go along.

Ok, so after the installation I kept getting the infamous "hardware error" msg. so I went ahead and did a Clear and Delete everything...

1 hour later I got the initial setup screen and I proceded to do the Guided Setup. at the end of the setup I found I didnt have the error anymore... however...

I now have to dial in to activate my recording function, except I only have an VoIP line and I am not able to connect (gives me an error every time saying it could not connect)

so my next question is obvious...

Is there a way to telnet into the box and change the Flag manually so that it wont try to connect to DirectTV?

could someone provide me with the command, or a link to a post that explains how to deactivate this dial-in procedure?

E

Please take a look at this knowledge-base article (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvrupgrade-support-center/?mod_id=2&id=111) (configuring PTVnet to make calls using Internet connection instead of phoneline).

btw, I had some time today and I tried to replicate the problem you are having and was unable to do it.

After booting with PTVnet and supplying the InstantCake CD, answering yes to all questions, I confirmed that the flags were set to their proper defaults. Installed the drive, deleted the first "hardware error" message received (as instructed) and everything worked fine.

Fantastic! i got the activation done via internet...

General question about the product...

Does PTVnetHD 6.3x disable encryption? if not, what do you recommend I do to disable it? I am planning on installing TyTool and mfs_ftp next and I was wondering if there any other steps I need to do before getting these proggys to work.

Best Regards,

E

Glad you got it working.

No, PTVnet does not disable encryption. You'll need to research that on your own, its outside of the scope of the products and services we offer.

Thx

I have two Hughes SD-DVR40 DirecTV Tivos. After receiving a new drive from DVRUpgrade and placed it in the first SD-DVR40, then i removed it and installed it in other one. Now on both SD-DVR40 i get the same "ERROR #51".

I am now doing a "clear" on both of them and waiting the hour for them to come back up. Hopefully I will be as successful as the first post and they will both come back up.

Once you've booted a drive in one unit, and then move it to another unit, you will get that error. Our kits are configured so that the first time you boot one in whatever unit you've purchased for, it will work fine. But the error you are getting makes sense if you've then moved the drive to another unit...

... the Clear and Delete Everything should work fine for you...
