how to tell if usb ports are on

Hello,, I was wondering how I could tell if my usb ports are engaged on the back of my phillips DSR-708 directv reciever.

I recently purchased instantcake and ptv net from this website (dvrupgrade) and a friend of mine helped me install it. I'm not sure if he enabled the usb's though. We did replace the failing hard drive in that tivo unit with a new one, and everything on that end is working fine.

I was out of the room when he ran the software,, I had agreed to bbq in return for the favor, so I didnt get to see what he was doing.. I can get around a computer pretty good,, but he has done this kind of stuff for years at work so I figured I was in good hands.

I have a Linksys USB200M usb to ethernet adapter I am trying to use to connect my tivo to my home network but I am not having any luck. I searched on here and found that this is one of the correct adapters that should work.

But it doesn't light up or anything when I plug it into the usb's on my tivo. Also, I cannot see it on my computer screen anywhere when I am looking at my network.. Is there something else I should do to get this to work? Do I need to know my tivo's i.p. address or something to set the network up?

If your lights aren't lighting up and you are not seeing the unit on your network then its one of the following issues:

1) broken or incompatible network adapter
2) bad cable
3) misconfigured router (make sure dhcp is turned on)
4) improperly installed software

At a minimum, I'd recommend you redo your installation - make sure you are in the room, and be sure to follow the instructions, word-for-word...

Well,, it's a brand new cable, as well as a brand new network adapter. I suppose it could be incompatible,, but I did find a thread on here that says that model number should work...

Do you know if the adapter that is sold on this website will work with my tivo? I could always just return my other adapter to the store.

As far as my router being mis-configured.. I'm not sure how to check it.... I am using it right now and it is working,, my DSL modem goes to it,, then out to my computer via ethernet cable, and I have 3 other ports left open on it
