I am having trouble using Instantcake to upgrade to a new SATA hard drive for a Series 3 unit? I have used Series 2 versions of Instantcake in the past without any problems.

I just purchased the new Series 3 version of Instantcake and cannot get it to work. The software will not get past the initialization stage, it hangs up on a message that says "input: AT Translated Set 2 Keyboard as /class/input/input0". It never gets to the screens that ask you the questions about upgrading the hard drive.

I'm using a SATA to IDE converter (on the secondary IDE cable) that I plugged into the 1TB SATA hard drive.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I need to do to get things to work correctly? Thanks.

It sounds like there is a problem recognizing your keyboard.

If you have access to an old PC, that is probably the first thing to try.

Otherwise, see if you can find a USB keyboard and see whether that works.

These are both just suggestions. I don't know whether either of them will work.

Thanks for the info. I'll try using a different keyboard. I've been able to do hard drive upgrades for my Series 2 units with no problems on this PC. There may be an issue with the Series 3 boot disk not recognizing the keyboard. I'm using 10 year PC to do my upgrades on. That may be part of the problem also.

I went ahead and tried a newer PC to do the hard drive upgrade on. Everything worked just fine. I believe my old PC has a VIA chipset that the InstantCake boot CD will not work on.

The VIA chipset is definitely a problem; I saw your post at TCF, as well.

I'll get that into the release notes just in case someone else runs into the problem as well. To my knowledge, I am the only other person, besides you, using PC's this old.

BTW, about a year ago, I tried to rebuild the kernel for this boot CD (it is the same as Spike's mfslive CD) to incorporate the VIA support, but could not get it to work...

Lou, thanks for the info. Good idea to put it in the release notes for those of us trying to make use of our old PC's :)

I tried to install Instant Cake for a Series 3 using my brand new computer, but was unable to get my cdrom mounted. I have an ASUS P5Q motherboard with the cdrom set up as IDE (PATA). No amount of guessing where to mount it (hda, hdb, etc.) worked. Instant Cake had no problem recognizing my USB-SATA mounted new drive, though.

I think the cdrom not being recognized is a result of my using a relatively new motherboard and the driver not being part of the Instant Cake image. I ended up using my old computer, also with a PATA cdrom drive, and everything worked well.
