OK..I seemed to have gotten past my original problem (see above) but now I've got a new error message:
/dev/hdc: read only file system
restore failed: unable to open destination device for writing
Cannot continue - processing aborted
this is a brand new HD...not formatted. do they come from the factory as read only?

It sounds like you don't have the jumpers set right on your drive or you have it connected to the wrong part of your ribbon cable.

Its definitely an indication that your drive(s) aren't connected as you think they are; you should double check that, and ensure things are connect as per the instructions.

I had the same issue and verified my jumper and cable settings. I moved the HD and CD Rom onto the same Primary IDE controller. Now I am receiving the following message:
/dev/hdc: No such device or address.
Restore Failed: Unable to open destination device for writing.
I tired to delete all partitions, leave with just one undefined partition. a FAT32 and finally a EXT2 patition with the same results.

Richard...all my problems were related to not having it hooked up correctly. Make sure you read and re-read the instructions and double check your hook up. I thought I had my stuff right when it turns out I didn't

Make sure the hard drive you are trying to restore is set as master(so jumpered) and is in the master position (last black connector) on the secondary ide cable (black motherboard connector). :)
