I lost my drive, so I bought InstantCake TWP for Series 1 stand alone (I have Philips 31203) (Seagate 160 gb drive)

I have a TurboNet installed, and every thing works ok execpt network

I run Windows 2k3 Servers with 2 - dhcp servers to hand out IP's which work with everything else. And I see net activity from switch lights, but I don't see an IP being handed out. Of course the net fails.

I have tried cables, and reinstall etc.

IP Scanner shows no unkown IP's o trace to.

What am I missing here?

Sounds like either a problem with your network, or with the TurboNet card, itself. Other than verifying that you have the TurboNet card installed properly and that you've got a link light; meaning that the unit is directly connected to your network, you really need to troubleshoot your network by eliminating as many variables as possible.

Most folks use networked TiVo's by plugging them into a router with a DHCP server; if you don't have something like that to check things with, you might want to consider borrowing one from a friend. Beyond that, it sounds like a Windows configuration issue.

Lou,
Thanks for the hints, so far I have gotten deeper in and in the Message logs start up says it can’t find a network card. Which explains a lot. Unfortunately the old turbo net used a realtek chip on an ISA card (no chance of finding an ISA card let alone one with that realtek chip.

I gave up yesterday and ordered a new net & mem card from 9th tee. Hope that will solve the problem.

That doesn't sound like a TurboNet card; that sounds like a TiVoNet adapter; and the drivers for TiVoNet are NOT installed by InstantCake; only TurboNet and CacheCard.

FWIW, we sell TurboNet and CacheCards (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/category.cfm?SID=1&Category_ID=4&page=cat&ModelID=20), as well...

I just purchased Instantcake+TWP as well. I installed to a drive with no problem. I have a TurboNet installed in my DSR6000. However, there are no prompts during the 'Cake install to set up net parameters such as the IP address, et cetera--and afterward I'm prompted to install the drive into the DirecTiVo. How is the setting of the net card parameters done? The instructions on this part of the install are lacking...

InstantCake sets up the networking for DHCP automatically so there are no instructions necessary for this; the charter of InstantCake is that it creates a drive equivalent to what we offer as part of our replacement drive kits; and that is how they come shipped, as well.

Okay, then...where would I go on the drive (what file(s)) to edit/change the networking from DHCP to static, and assign an IP address as well as change the MAC address given to the TurboNet card?

I got tired of waiting for an answer so I did my own digging. It turns out that the file containing the pre-defined setup info is /etc/rc.d/rc.net on the active partition (at least on my version). The file says that the TiVo gets a hardware address that's the result of banging on the crypto chip (assures unique hardware addresses), and the static IP already assigned is 192.168.1.202. It then mentions that you can run the nic_config command file to change the setup parameters for the net card, which will overwrite the rc.net file.

It would have been great if I'd just been told that I could change things myself by running the abovementioned file...and would have saved a couple day's time that I was without my TiVo.

Here's an old DVRplayground thread which discusses this (http://www.dvrplayground.com/forum/thread/10787/CacheCard-2.2-Static-IP-Address/). Remember, you are dealing with stuff that is pretty old and we couldn't migrate every discussion over to our forums from DVRplayground.

I'll look into creating a post which documents this for the Series1 units at some point, but remember, being part of the community means making contributions, not just waiting for answers, so thanks for chipping in.
