I downloaded the InstantCake for my Tivo 40 gig model. I unzipped the file to Desktop. I used Nero Xpress to burn an ISO copy. It was 200 plus megabytes. I set up a computer as instructed with two hard drives and a CD/DVD drive. I checked the settings in the BIOS and the CD drive is the secondary drive in the 0 IDE slot. The CD will not boot up in Linux. I tried a Weaknees ISO disk and it boots up LILO. Putting the Cake CD in after this boot does not help. I get a error message0X01. I tried making another CD but get the same results. I have removed the regular XP drive as you suggested.
What to do?

Further information: The 160 GB Seagate drive on Secondary master is formatted in FAT32. All I get when I attempt to use the CD is a single beep and a message to insert boot disk. I am using an Intel chip 3.2 speed.

Have you changed the boot sequence in the bios? When you burned the disk with Nero did you do so as an iso? If all else fails do a low level format of the target drive to zero any Microsoft signature on the hard drive. Also consider lowering the burn rate on the CD Drive, Nero always selects the fastest speed possible. Good Luck:)

Nero only had "music" or "data". I chose "data. The resulting file has .iso at the end. I burned at 4x. I will try the format idea. Thanks for your help.

I returned the XP drive to Primary 1 and it will not boot up with the FAT32 drive on Sec.master.If I remove the FAT32 drive it will boot up. So, I can't format the FAT32 drive. Any ideas?

Can you direct me to a program which will boot up in LInux? I've tried to get TivoTools Boot CD to no avail.

In Nero smart start under backup (2CDs over a safe, looks like a motion picture projector) is where the burn iso is located. use that to burn the instantcake cd. Why do you want a fat 32 disk inside the TiVo? Instantcake burns its own file system to the disk.

I went to a 120 GB drive and it would let me boot the XP drive. I then used Maxblast to fortat it as FAT32. StartCake still will not boot up with this drive as the target drive on the secondary.
Weaknees ISO disk will boot up but when I get to the "boot" prompt and put in the Startcake CD it reports error 0x01 and will not load. I must have not made an .iso disc even though it says .iso on the file name.

My Nero is Nero Express and does not use that icon. It made the Weaknees CD which will boot up in linux. I tried Sonic DVD which also will not boot up. I am getting qu
ite a pile of coasters. I read somewhere that the target disc must start out as FAT32 even though it will be changed by Linux. I appreciate your help. I felt all alone in the cyber wilderness.

LeonUnder Nero Express it is the bottom Icon stating Image ,Project, Copy>Disk Image or Saved Project>(a list of iso files) choose Instantcake File. Good Luck Leon:)

I found a Linux burner called InfraRecorder. It burned a disk size 468 MB. Privious disks had been about 250 MB. I think I was copying the folder instead of the three files in the folder. It copied Nero CD image file, 246+ MB, InstantCake-lc2-TCD540-9.3-01-2-540.iso 246MB+ and mfstools2.iso 108 MB+. Tried it with two drives and one drive with same result. Tried the Weaknees iso file and typed in linux hdb.ide and got error 0x40.
I will try the Nero Express method you suggested next.

Leon,

You are not burning your CD's correctly, but first thing is first, whether your target drive is formatted or partitioned or not is not a factor at all. So please don't spend any time trying to format your new drive as it will not make a difference.

If you are not comfortable with the details provided in the InstantCake README or do not have the tools recommended there, please use this article as a reference and you should be able to get on the right track:

How to Burn ISO Files to a CD (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm)

Lou,
A member named Rick directed me to the correct place in Nero Xpress to download ISO files. The resulting file was about 250 MB. It fired up and says it has made my A and B drives OK for the Tivo. I still get the Welcome Powering Up screen. I was suspicious of the cable so I replaced it with a regular IDE cable. No improvement. The original cable had very loose end connectors so when it powered up loose the drive cables were not seated correctly. I will take out the drives and redo them and try again. The IDE cable I am using does not have a blue end. Is this going to be a problem? If so I can take one out of a computer and use it.
One question I have is: when burning with a program called InfraRecorder, it let me unload the three files in the InstantCake folder and burn all three of them to the CD. This made a 468 MB CD. The one I used burned only the InstantCake ISO of 250 MB. The Nero burner had no way to burn more than one file to the CD.
Thanks,
Leon

InstantCake is ONE file; ONE large ISO and the size of this ISO file will vary depending upon the version of the software you are using and the type of TiVo you have. That ISO file should be "burned as an image" - there is no combining of files, or sizes to keep track of.

As for the remainder of your questions, those are more related to the usage and configuration requirements of InstantCake; please check the official discussion thread for more details and also keep a few things in mind...

1) you should be running diagnostics on your hard drive(s) to ensure they are good

2) you might want to try the process on a single drive and see if that works...

3) have a friend who is better versed in PC's take a look at the drive configurations, IDE cable, and anything else specific to your environment which may be causing problems

Ordinarily, InstantCake is easy to burn and use, but its expected that you are a savvy PC user and understand the ins-and-outs at the PC configuration level. If that is not in your comfort zone, then a pre-configured kit or sending your unit and drives for a recertification might be a better option. The initial cost of your InstantCake purchase is 100% applicable as a credit towards a new kit...

:p
After changing the IDE drive in the Tivo , changing the B drive and re-baking the two drives, all seems to be well. I'm redoing the Guided Setup now. Thanks for your help.
