OK - I have a Cat6 network all throughout my home. I would like to take advantage of the bandwidth (I have it so why not use it..right??)
Per a previous post from Lou, I have a listing of 4 Network adapters that work. However, these do not support gigabit. Are there any on the market that do? If so, is it overkill?
I have the following system:
Hughes SD-HD40 (upgrades to 160 GB hardrive).
I just installed instantCake and PTVnet software.
Thanks!

Your message seems to indicate that you are connecting your machine via a hard-wired ethernet cable.
I suspect that with a hard-wired one, the limitation would be either your box, your router, or whatever other machine you are trying to connect to, not your ethernet adaptor.
AFIK, the only ethernet adaptors that have transmission limitations are wireless ones.
Unless you are planning to turn off encryption and transfer shows from your box to your PC, I doubt it makes any difference anyway.
You certainly don't need any additional speed for a telnet session. It should not make much of a difference with ftp either.

Just so you know, the usb.map file (you can find it in the /ptvupgrade/misc folder on your drive) lists the Linksys USB1000 as supported. I think you need to make some adjustments on your router and/or PC to take advantage of the higher bandwidth (jumbo frames) and as Bruce said, not much advantage to doing so unless you are doing video extraction which is not something we directly support or have a lot of experience with.
There is a lot more information on this at DealDatabase (http://www.dealdatabase.com); I've seen a few threads on it there in my travels. If you learn anything meaningful and have success, please post your results, I'm sure they will be of interest to others.
Thx,
Lou

No, you cannot use the TiVo Wireless adapter, you must use one of the adapters listed as 'supported' in the PTVnet support info (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20)... (that does include the TrendNet (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/accessory_nomodel.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=341) which is the blue one you are probably referring to...)

Got it Lou,
Now I bought an upgrade hard drive from you for this same unit. Is the tivoweb software installed by default or was it a purchase option 2 years ago when I purchase the drive? If not, I assume I will need to purchase the pvnet software and burn a CD from the ISO file per the instructions, correct?
My friend told me that you put the pvnet /tivoweb software on upgrade kits by default.
Thanks again,
-john

If you ordered a drive with the PTVnet option, then TiVoWebPlus, telnet/ftp and GoToMyDVR are installed -- but you do have to specify (and pay for) the networking options.
If you ordered just a basic replacement drive kit (with no PTVnet option) then its not installed and you'd either need to send us the drive, and order a network recertification, or you could do the installation yourself with a DIY software product like PTVnet.
