I have a Hughes SD-DVR40 DirecTV/Tivo unit. It is running the 6.4a-01-2-151 software and has the 32 hour drive. I have a couple of questions I need answered before I try the PTVnet 6.x upgrade. Currently, the only way I have been able to get recorded programs off the DVR is to burn them to DVD and then load them on the PC. Will enabling the USB ports on the back allow me to access these programs via network? Second, will running the PTVnet 6.x upgrade damage any of the recorded programs already on my drive?
I'm exploring options here, so any other suggestions would be appreciated.

You may want to review the general support details for PTVnet (in the articles area) as well as some of the threads in the DIY software discussions.

In short, PTVnet does enable the USB ports, installs telnet/ftp and TiVoWebPlus and having access to your unit on the network is something you'll need to do in order to pull programs off. However, PTVnet is not a tool for extracting video, so once you've enabled those ports and have access to the unit via telnet and ftp, you'll need to do some additional hacking in order to pull recorded material off. Its just not within the scope of PTVnet or anything DVRupgrade does so I can't help you beyond that...

As for installing it with existing material on the drive, you can definitely do that and it won't affect the content that is there.

Thanks for your help, Lou. I've looked at the available software on the site. As far as I can tell and based on the software version I'm running, I believe the PTVnet 6.x upgrade disk is all that's required to upgrade my existing drive - is that correct?

If all you are looking to do is add the functionality I described as being part of PTVnet, then yes, all you need is the PTVnet product. I moved your post over into the DIY software discussion area; you may want to read through the discussions in here, as well.
