View Full Version : Tivo Keeps Reverting Back To DHCP Address instead of keeping Static Address

I have a Series 2 HDVR2 with 6.4a and PTVnet. I have modified the rc.sysinit.author file to set the Static IP Address I want. I have also renamed DHCP_ON to STATIC_ON.

The unit DOES come up with the Static IP address I set in the rc.sysinit.author file. The problem is that it sometimes reverts back to the initial DHCP address that it initially received. It will not keep the Static IP address.

Any ideas what might be causing this? What can I do to ensure it keeps the Static IP address?

Thanks for any help.

what is offering your tivo IP addresses? Is it a router or a server?

I can't tell you how to do this specifically (as I prefer to just stick with DHCP), but you'll need to ensure that the IP addresses are set in MFS if you want to go with STATIC. There are additional tools in /ptvupgrade/bin and discussions on tivocommunity.com (http://tivocommunity.com) about setting the IP addresses to STATIC.

I can't give you a cookbook because I don't have a unit on the network to model it with, but what is likely is that you'll want to remove both the STATIC_ON and DHCP_ON flags. Remove any changes you've made to the rc.sysinit.author. And then use netconfic.tcl or possibly set_static.tcl, as well. You can also use network-delete.tcl to clear your network settings if you mess up.

Don't try any of these without a serial cable...

Understood. I do have a serial cable, but really did not want to go through all of this. Perhaps I will just set it back to DHCP and forget the whole thing. My router is what is handing out the IP addresses. Another way to do this I guess is to have my router hand out DHCP Reservations that way a specific Tivo gets a specific IP.

Thanks for the advice, I just thought it was easier. Like I said, it does get the Static IP address, it just does not stay that way for long.

As long as you have a serial cable, there is no harm in experimenting with those scripts. They are all tested and they will work, but because I don't have a system set up that I can actually tell you the sequence on, you'll have to experiment a little bit.

To add to this thread....

I have a new Instacaked 6.2a (2 of them) with TWP, Hackman, MRV - static IP set (someone in the forums said was better for MRV to work) - yet in a matter of days - it goes to DHCP but the static IP is still set. Even on the TWP page it shows the right IP address but in my DHCP scope - I see it dished out 2 IP's which I can get to.

Why would all the static IP settings be set, even show on TWP page - but it then goes out to get DHCP? Odd. Does this thread still apply to this case - I either have to setup static in MFS (saw in another forum) or put back to DHCP?

Note to add - when I login to the Tivo under the DHCP address - go to TWP/Info - I see the TIvo IP address set to what I want, the remote client address (me), then HTTP Host address which is the DHCP one and the only one I can access my Tivo with now. Did not know there was 2 IP's addresses it can have - Tivo & HTTP.

It's one of two things...

1) you've got static ip settings set in mfs and the dhcp client is still set up to run

2) you've got dhcp settings set in mfs and you are also using static up settings in one of the start up scripts.

Just figure out which one it is based upon how you set up your static ip in the first, place and make sure you disable the other mechanism that is undoing it...

Thanks for the point....I was not 100% sure so I figured I'd ask. I did go thru the article on setting up in MFS with the ptvupgrade/bin/set_ip on my one tivo - need to change on the second and see if it helps.

Oddly, thru all this prior to me losing access on the set ip it was working, now even after a reboot - MRV no longer see's each other so I hope changing in MFS does the trick here.

Pretty sure the trick with MRV is that things need to be set up inside of MFS and not in the 'traditional' way were were doing it with PTVnet before it was doable in MFS...
