Hi,
I just imaged a new hard drive (thanks to the 3.5c "upgrade" it was bricked this weekend) on my SAT-T60 with instantcake and everything went smoothly but from much of the documentation I've seen on instantcake, I was under the impression that I would have telnet support "out of the box". I can ftp into the Tivo but telnet connections are refused. It seems like tnlited isn't being properly started by the scripts that are installed by instantcake. Is there a way to fix it via ftp?

does it matter what IP address the Tivo is on (it gets its address via DCHP)? I poked through some of the rc.* scripts and they all seem to be referencing 192.168.1.x addresses.

also, will there be a 3.5c instantcake version released soon, and since I just purchased the 3.5b version a few weeks ago, do I qualify for a free upgrade?

thanks.

InstantCake for the Series1 is exactly the same as the basic replacement drive kits for these units; They come NetReady, which is described in more detail here (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/netready.cfm); its also mentioned in the release notes (see below). In short, what this means is that FTP is available, but to use telnet, you need to "unlock" the drive. The aforementioned link describes this in great detail.

As for 3.5c, we don't talk about futures. When we have something to say there, we'll post an announcement on these forums, though.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I looked all over here and 2 other forums and somehow didn't spot that. Now that I know what to do, I like that mechanism but maybe it should be documented in the normal instructions and/or release notes. I had read somewhere that telnet, ftp, and several other things were installed by instantcake but I didn't see anything about "unlocking" telnet.

In one thread (or perhaps a webpage) I saw a reference to instantcake that mentioned an advanced installation mode where you could activate telnet, so after instantcaking my tivo the first time (using novice mode), I pulled out the hard disk and instantcaked it again with the advanced installation mode but never saw those options. I could have saved a good bit of time had I known about the "unlock" scripts.

Just so you know, it IS documented in the release notes; here is the excerpt:

InstantCake for your Series1 DirecTiVo unit includes LBA48 support, large swap, and has been tested to run on drives as large as 500GB. InstantCake will build the equivalent of DVRupgrade NetReady replacement drive kits; these are drives with TurboNet and CacheCard drivers installed, as well as bash serial access enabled. You can purchase a TurboNet or CacheCard separately and do the software configuration yourself without reinstalling the drive in a PC. More information regarding NetReady can be found here (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/forums/../dvr/stores/1/netready.cfm). Note that if you are using an external modem plugged into your serial port, you may need to disable BASH access to prevent conflicts. We recommend the use of TurboNet cards instead of external modems. Also note that InstantCake does not support TiVoNet adapters; only TurboNet and CacheCard adapters.

If it is stated anywhere on our site, or in any of our postings, that telnet is available as part of InstantCake (or any of our standard replacement drive kits), please let me know where, and I'll have it fixed. Obviously, we can't be held responsible for what others might be saying, however. I think this might just be a case of you misunderstanding what we initially stated, though...

Remember, these are DIY tools, and we've gone to a lot of trouble to provide the documentation that is currently available, and it does cover the details of the situation you've raised; there's just not much more than we can do other than continue to remind people that reading the release notes is important; and of course, posting your questions here, if you need some clarifications.
