what does it take to hook my seris 2 Directv tivo to my home computer network?

I purchased instantcake and ptv net from here as well as the usb-ethernet adapter but am having no luck.

I replaced my hard drive in my tivo with another 80 gig wester digital, brand new.. ran cake/ptv on em of course..

When I plug in the adapter to either usb on my tivo, both lights come on,, the 100 Mbs as well as the link light come on,, but my router doesn't see them at all.

The router is a Linksys 10/100 5-port workgroup switch model ezxs55w. I am currently using it with my dsl modem hooked to the uplink port on it, and the other 5 ports are for my computer, etc...

Will this router not work with the adapter I bought for my tivo?

Thanks for any replies
Matt

Went to the Linksys site what you have is a switch and not a router. Unless your DSL connection has router capabilities you will not get IP address assigned to your Tivo. Suggest you read Lou's article about assigning Static IP addresses, then your network would see your Tivo.

Or, just ensure there is a properly configured DHCP server somewhere in your environment. I believe there is a way to configure a Windows XP box as a DHCP server, as well.

I'd highly recommend that over messing with static IP addresses; unless you have a serial cable and you are very comfortable with things, you could make things worse by changing the configuration of the TiVo.

My dsl modem does have wireless router cababilities,, and it connects to my Wii without any problem at all,,, but I haven't had luck with a wireless adapter on the tivo. The modem is not useful as a regular wired router though,, it only has the one port on it to go to the computer,, or a router, etc... Maybe I have my terminology wrong.. I dont know if it's being a router.. I just know that it is wireless internet

I have no idea what dhcp is. I am fairly computer literate.. but I am brand new to this whole networking thing. I am able to go to an ip address and look at my system as a whole, I believe it is the address for my dsl modem.
I check a box on a page at the mentioned ip address, that says "enable dhcp" but it wanted me to manually assign addresses,, and the only time I tried that I had to call tech support and have them reset my modem... hahaha

Maybe I chose the worng project for my skill level.... It sounded so easy when I read about it,,.

Thanks for your help

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Control Protocol. I suggest you go to WWW.GOOGLE.COM and do a google search for DHCP server. You will find a lot of freeware programs which can fill your needs. Your machine must have the same TCPIP address header. I suggest 192.168.0.n where n is a number between 0-254

Which ethernet adapter are you using?

If you have computers connecting to your wireless DSL "modem," then it is indeed a router. Some people think a "router" has to have a switch built in. As a matter of fact, usually only the cheap consumer ones include a switch.
