I cannot boot from the Instacake CD. The Linux installation fails and results in a kernel panic. This is a new home brew system with a problematic mobo, it will not run XP. However, I am running Ubunto without a problem. I have very little linux experience. I am wondering, can I run Instacake from inside the terminal mode? My other thoughts are to run it from a virtualized machine although I would need to learn how to do that. Lastly, if MSFTools can run is there a way I can use the image from instacake as the restore tivo source?

I welcome all suggestions. My computer options are limited to this flaky mobo for a week. Also, I have access to a mac bookpro with Parallels installed, but to usb drive adapter.

Thanks,

Dave

InstantCake is designed to be booted and run native on your PC so if it's not booting properly, your best option might be to find another PC.

With that in mind, there is no reason you couldn't move the scripts and image over to your Ubuntu install, make modifications to it and run it in Ubuntu, but that may beyond your skill set.

Another alternative would be to use VMWARE (if you have it) on your Ubuntu installation and create a VM which boots from the InstantCake CD. You'll need to set things up so it recognizes the proper devices for your CD-ROM and hard drive, but it may very well work for you. Again, that would have to be within your skills.

Again, finding another PC is probably your best option, but as an alternative, you could consider purchasing a kit from our site (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/category.cfm?SID=1&Category_ID=2&learnmore=1). We offer a 100% trade-in credit on your InstantCake purchase if you are not successful with it.
