I'm in the process of adding a 1TB drive to my wife's Series 3 Tivo. I've formatted the drive via Instant Cake and all seemed to go well. Now, my question: my wife is dismayed that she will loose the current recordings if I install the new drive. Is there a way to restore the recordings from the original drive to the new drive?

Yes, you can use WinMFS to copy your original S3 drive with settings and recordings to a new drive. You can get it at MFSlive.org
You could have just added a 1Tb external esata drive also but using the 1 internal drvie is best option. You would just take the 1Tb out and use WinMFS to format it and then use WinMFS to copy the settings and recordings over and your wife should be good to go.
Also you could transfer your wifes programs off the S3 to your PC (or another S3/THD/THDXL unit) and then transfer them back when you got the 1Tb back in.

What you can do is use the TiVo Desktop Plus software (available from TiVo for around $20) to move the recordings from your TiVo to your PC. Unfortunately, any programs that have been 'protected' cannot be moved using TiVoToGo, so its possible you may not be able to move them all.
Once you install your new drive, you can still access the programs on your TiVo as long as you share them from the PC using the "TiVoToComeBack" feature.

Will this work on a series 3 Tivo?

Yes; that was the original question. It will also work on a TiVo HD or any of the Series2 TiVo standalone units - wherever TiVo Desktop Plus is supported.

Do you have to watch the entire recorded show or just begin to watch it? I have about 30 recordings I would like to copy to a replacement drive on my Samsung DVR - SIR-S4120R connected to DirecTV.

TiVo Desktop is not supported for Series2 DIRECTV units, so you won't be able to do this at all.

Thanks for the info. Today is the first time I have looked into replacing a disk drive in a DVR so not familiar with all the terminology such as Series 2 or 3, MVR, R, etc.. I will post another thread on the Series2 DirecTV Tito DVR Discussions forum.
My DVR started stuttering when watching a regular broadcast (not recording), and I suspect it is the disk drive having difficulty reading. There are a lot of shows on it that have not been viewed yet.
