I just completed my first upgrade. I've been scanning the forums here and elsewhere for a while and finally put my plan into action. It was a modest one. Duplicate the original drive onto a larger drive, expand the partition to take advantage of the extra space and enable networking. I didn't really want a lot of space so I just picked up an 80GB drive from our local university salvage store. I had to stop a few times to find the answers and take the box apart several times. Here is what I ended up doing without reciting the various How-Tos and help documents that I rummaged through for answers.

My recommendations before beginning are to read the complete Hinsdale How-to, review your IDE drive positions and settings. Review syntax for dd copy, mfs tools and some basic linux commands. (shift page-up is one i found to be very helpful)

Downloaded MFS Tools 2.0 and followed the Hinsdale How-to(Step 7, Option #3) to make a copy of the original drive using dd copy. I made no backups(my original drive is my backup) but was confident, after reviewing the syntax of dd copy and confirming my drive positions by scrolling back on the boot screen, that I would be fine.
Using the Hinsdale How-to(Step 10, UPGRADE CONFIGURATION #2), I expanded the drive with the mfsadd command. At this point I stopped and installed the expanded drive into the DTiVo to make sure everything was ok.
After a little searching and debate, I purchased PTVnet and ran it. Initially, i received a few errors regarding no such file. After further research, to make a long story short, I created a couple of missing directories and used the PTVNet FORCE command to finalize the install. I think it is because I have 6.4a and not 6.4 I'm not sure what this may have affected but at this point it doesn't really matter because I am enjoying the experiment. If all else fails, I start over. :)

I am using the PTVnet recommended Linksys USB200M usb to ethernet adapter connected to a D-Link DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Access Point (uses the second usb connection for power) set to client mode preconfigured to connect to our family wireless router.

I was pretty excited when I finished up this morning at 2am. I checked ftp and telnet then put it to bed.

The only thing I need to do now is figure out what I want to do next.
