I have a HDVR2 that I'm planning on upgrading to a 300GB HD.
I want to enable the USB for networking
If I buy PTV and Instantcake, do I also need the LBA48 too?
If so, when do the install scripts ask for it?
Is the universal 11 disc a better tool for what I want to do?
Thanks!

Assuming that by "PTV" you mean "PTVnet?"
If so, then, "no" you don't need anything else.

You mean the Universal Boot CD? If so, then probably not, the Universal boot CD contains many of the components used on the InstantCake CD and the PTVnet CD but there are no automation scripts and it does not contain some of the things those other CD's have.
If you are looking to build a new drive for your DirecTV TiVo DVR from 'scratch' and need it to be imaged with the proper OS and configured for USB 2.0 Ethernet functionality than the combination of PTVnet and InstantCake is the correct thing to consider purchasing.
