Is there a list of disk errors and what they mean? I downloaded InstantCake twice and had the same bytes so I know the download worked. I burned the ISO cd. I connected the cd rom on Primary Slave and a 160 gb Maxtor on Secondary Master with all other drive devices disconnected. When I turned on the computer, InstantCake booted and listed 3 F button options and then gave me a message that it was loading. A minute later I received this error message:

disk error 80, AX=4200, Drive 9F

Everytime I reboot I get the same message with the 4200 changing to 4280 42A0 etc.

The Maxtor has a full low level format and passed Maxtor testing. I then tried InstantCake with a 40 gb Maxtor that had the same formatting done. When InstantCake booted, it came back with the same message as the 160 gb disk. Both disks are NTSC, should they be FAT32 or maybe unformatted?

I have a TIVO series 2, version 24004A. The original disk smoked and the software could not be recovered. InstantCake looked like my only option.

Can you help me please?

Could be a problem with your PC. Have you tried booting the same CD on a different one? If it crashes on a different PC try re-burning on a different media brand and/or at a slower speed. Either of these things could be the problem.

I tried burning another cd at slower speed. It worked. Linux booted properly and then a new problem cropped up and I'll share it because it might help someone else. My PC has 2 IDE cables with Master/Slaves. It also has an array of flash disk ports where you can plug in a variety of flash drives. When I tried to follow the Primary/Secondary directions for creating a TIVO disk, it could not find the Secondary drives - hdc and hdd. After a few trials I discovered that Linux was assigning hdf to my 160 gb Maxtor and when I went into advanced mode it let me specify hdf instead of hdc. It worked. I not only saved my smoked TIVO, I now have 175 hours of programming. Thanks Lou, this is awesome.
