I do not have a land line and i would like to upgrade my receiver and be able to to use the recording capabilities. how can i do that without connecting my recorder to a phone line

This can be done with a PTVnet kit which is explained in more detail here (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/networking_series2dtv.cfm).
Technically, if you go through guided setup for your satellite dish (by re-initiating guided setup), you still need to make a test call with a landline, however as long as you do not go through guided setup when you get the kit, you can get away without needing a phone line, at all.
As an alternative to the 'test call' through a phone line, you can also configure the unit (using telnet and a USB Ethernet adapter) to make the test call using a network connection, however it is a more detailed process and we don't recommend you do it -- if you leave that feature enabled, your unit could update its software and overwrite the PTVnet changes and you would then be required to use a phone line again.
