Instant Cake With Parallels

I have a series 2 tivo (tcd540) that i used instant cake on about a year ago with great success. The other day i was getting the looping start up screen. So i pulled the drive to check to see if it was bad, it wasnt. i decided to re bake the drive but only this time using my mac with parallels. Got it to install, put the drive in my tivo and i get a white screen. I read on the forums it could be the ide cables ect.. but they are good and plugged in. I went back to hook it up to parallels and my windows xp doesnt boot. I think I wrote it over that, which isnt a problem. So Does instant cake work over usb external hd? If so what options do i check?
