I am new to the community and though I tried a search for this item, I couldn't find any previous posts, so I apologize in advance if this is a redundant thread.

I am looking to order and use the Instacake software to format both IDE and SATA drives, and I would like to use the USB adapter that is sold here. Problem is, I do not know too much about it.

I plan on using a laptop with it's HD removed, easily set to boot from the CD/DVD drive since it seems like this adapter is a really great and handy thing to use with the laptop. Anyhow, I am a bit fuzzy on how the software will recognize the USB adapter and the subsequent drive hooked up to it. Is this a setting that I have to do, or is the USB setup recognized automatically?

The USB SATA adapter (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/accessory_nomodel.cfm?SID=1&Product_ID=778) will only work with InstantCake for the Series3 and TiVo HD units. You connect your SATA drive to the adapter and connect the adapter to a PC or laptop using the USB port. The drive will be recognized automatically as a PATA device.

You cannot use the USB SATA adapter with older versions of InstantCake (ie versions for Series1 and Series2 units) as the CD will not recognize it. If you do not have a PC with an IDE interface, then we recommend you consider a kit, instead.

Hey Lou, what is the kit that you are mentioning here? Do you sell that kit?
