I'll apologize for my lack of skill off the top.

I got a Series 1 Philips HDR 312 without a hard drive, so I've been trying to use Instant Cake to set up a new one. It seemed to burn the disk fine, and I believe I connected the hard drive and cd drive correctly in my computer.

It runs through most or all of the program. At or very near 100% I get an error message that says something like "decompression error .1%" it then says something like "your cake is ready, please turn off and install." (I assume the error message is my problem, but don't know what it means.)

If you plug the hard drive into the tv, you programming will pass through, the light will turn orange on the unit, then you get a grey screen that says "almost there, please wait a few seccond." It then seems to switch between programming and the grey screen every minute or so.

I am new to this forum and will start searching for similar notes, but if anyone can help by pointing me in the right direction, or with an answer, it is much appreciated.

Thank you.

You may want to try re-burning your CD at a slower speed, or perhaps use a different computer (if you have one) to create your replacement drive. Something definitely went wrong during the InstantCake build process so its not going to work properly in your TiVo.

Please see the official InstantCake discussion over in the DIY software area for more info.
