Hi Lou,
First I gotta say that I don't envy your job. Second I also have to say that I initially used Instantcake 2 years ago with great success. I have searched for the answer I seek, but I can't seem to find it.
I'm updating my same old series 2 with the same software image that I used 2 years ago. I have the CD drive set as a slave on the primary IDE cable with a jumper. I also have a Seagate 500gb drive as a master on the secondary IDE cable with a jumper. However whether I run it as auto or advanced, I get the same error..
/dev/hdc: No Such Device or Address
Restore Failed: Unable to open destination device for writing
Cannot Continue -- Process Aborted.
Any Ideas? I've tried reorganizing the cables, and I checked in the BIOS. Everything is ok there.

If I may offer a suggestion...
Pay close attention to the linux boot messages as Instantcake boots up. They will tell you the enumerations of your CDROM and hard disk. Have you disconnected your system disk? Then I bet your CDROM and Tivo drive are hda and hdb (in some order).

I will look again, but I tried using all 4 options under advanced as well. The system disk is unplugged also. And when the linux program is booting, it recognizes both the CD drive and the Seagate.

You should see in the text, when it "recognizes" these drives, that it has enumerated them by assigning them a label - "hda", "hdb", etc.
I'm not familiar with the command, but I read this tip elsewhere. "dmesg |grep hd" is a linux command to search the message buffer of the kernel for lines containing "hd". This may allow you to identify the enumerations.

Glad you don't envy it - we don't need any more competition than we already have. :-)
The error you are getting is an indication of the drives not being connected correctly. As previous responders have pointed out, you need to ensure that the devices you are specifying are in fact, what you think they are. Default is PRIMARY SLAVE for the CD-ROM (/dev/hdb) and SECONDARY MASTER for the hard drive (/dev/hdc).
If your PC does not conform to this, you'd need to either use the 'advanced mode' if the version of InstantCake you have supports it, or edit the scripts (which can be a pain).
Hope that helps,
Lou
