InstantCake'd unit auto updates?

Here's a noob question for someone.

I searched, but haven't quite found the answer. I just purchased InstantCake2 and "baked" a new hard drive. Was easy, almost TOO easy! Now, I am wondering, do I need to purchase the "PTVnet" software to be able to restore my network ability and all the other "updates" that I orginally got automatically over the past couple of years from TiVo? I read a lot of discussions on PTVnet, but did not understand completely what its capabilities are for my model.

My unit is a model TCD540040 series 2 TiVo.


UPDATED LATER
I did find some discussion that would lead me to believe that the Series 2 that was "InstantCake'd" WOULD automatically update over a period of time. Is this true? Will this restore my networking and the basic "CURRENT" TiVo functions?
