    What one do I need?

I have a model # tv080, and I bought 2 hard 160gig drives for it. What software do I need to buy to get these in it? Thank you.

There is no TiVo with the model number "tv080" -- can you please take another look? If you are uncertain of the model number, then please post the first three digits of your service ID.

Ok, I guess noone has ever done this.... How about this, does it have to be hook up to cable(or what ever) to get past the boot screen?

People have been expanding the Tivo Series 1 for almost 10 years. Its just that not many people follow this forum and your question is almost incomprehensible.

To put the two drives you mentioned into the Philips HDR112, you need to go to the dvrupgrade store (link at the top of this page), and look for the pulldowns. Choose brand "Philips", and model "HDR110/112". This will lead you to a page where you can purchase either of two versions of Instantcake configured for this system. And you have a choice of distribution by download, or by CD via mail.

To use the instantcake disk to initalize your two harddisks, you must connect the two hard disks to your computer. It's wise to disconnect your system hard disk at the same time. You must ensure your computer can boot from CDROM. The Instantcake disc contains the image that must be written to the Tivo disks, and scripts to do so, on a self-booting Linux-based CD. Boot this CD, and you will be guided through a set of questions. You must identify the address (such as hda) that Unix has assigned to your CDROM drive, and the addresses (such as hdb, hdc, sda, sdb) of the two Tivo disks.

There is a risk of overwriting your system disk, or other problems, if you don't follow instructions carefully. The process presumes you can download and burn an .iso image to a cd, and identify the addressing Linux assigns your disks. If you're uncomfortable with this, seek the help of a geek friend.

Check your drive jumpers. I can't tell you what they should be...but it would be a common error.

Yep Thank you, but one is set to master, and the other to slave.

On a two-drive system, I wonder if it's critical WHICH is master and which is slave. I'd try switching the two jumper settings.

I had a two drive series 1 Tivo that I had upgraded back around 2001, in which the 80GB secondary drive died (the original Tivo drive outlived it!). Last weekend I used InstantCake to repair/upgrade it to a single 160GB Maxtor, without losing support for my TivoNet board - since my VOIP phone service seems to be disagreeable to any dialout. It went very well.

I got past it, and got the drives to work. Now its asking me to call to activate service with them. What did I forget to do? Thank you.
