Samsung SIR-S4120 ... replacement drive/unit stalls out at logo screen

    I purchased a replacement hard drive for a Samsung SIR-S4120 DirecTV/Tivo unit.

I'm fairly certain I did everything correctly during installation (Lou's directions are perfectly clear).

But when I powered the unit up it stalled out at the logo screen (the one right after "Powering up ...") and went nowhere. The same thing happens every time I shut the unit down and restart it; the unit goes to the logo screen and then gets nowhere.

The hard drive is able to spin up -- I've heard it.

What are my next options -- short of getting a non-Tivo DVR from DirecTV?

Is there some way to re-set the unit and try again?

Can I test the replacement drive by connecting it to my home computer?

Is there anything I can try?

    Thanks for the help.

Yes Walter, I have had a similar experience with my 500GB drives on my RCA's it takes a little longer due to the drive size because I believe it is encoding the area for recorded programs.
Yes you may remove the drive and test it. If the tests are non-destructive you may reuse it otherwise if it passes you will have to reapply Instantcake.
you may rebake your Instantcake at any time, just understand it will make all settings, wishlists and recorded programs vanish.
Good luck with your quest. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for the assistance.

I've tried "patience" -- overnight, all the next workday -- and the unit is still stalled out at that point.

    I don't have the software (I ordered a configured drive from DVRupgrade.com).

    Any options left?

Look in the upper right hand corner of this html page. See private messages. Click on it send a private message to Lou Jacob. Tell him the replacement drive is not working in your machine. You may have to pay postage one way but I am sure Lou will do whatever is required to make it right. That is just the way he is.

  5. please the DVRupgrade Helpdesk

Actually, if you are having a problem with a kit purchased from us (DVRupgrade), please use our helpdesk (not my PM inbox); that will open up a trouble ticket in our system and allow us to support you properly. If you send it to my PM, I'd only respond and send you back to helpdesk to get you back on track, anyway...
