Mysterious upgrade

Last October I did a PTVNet/Instant Cake upgrade on my Phillips DSR704. I had a bad hard drive and wanted to add networking capability. Due to adapter problems, and the fact that it wasn't a high priority, I hadn't gotten the network to work yet. A week or two ago, I started getting a nag message about making a call (I haven't had the phone line hooked up since October). Yesterday I got a TrendNet adapter. When I plugged it in this morning, no lights lit up (very disappointing). When I turned on the DTV to reboot, I had a message that I needed to activate my DVR service. I thought maybe since I had not made a call, they suspended me or something, but I was still receiving the Sat signals. After looking at the setup, I noticed I ws now running 6.3e. Which would explain why the TrendNet didn't light up, but I can't figure out how I got the upgrade. I had last tried a linksys USB200M adapter a month or so ago. It didn't work, but I left it hooked up. If it was working on some level and I didn't know it, why did I get the nag messages. I don't think I set it up to call over the network, so how did I get upgraded all of a sudden? And why do I have to reactivate my DVR service?

So I guess now I have to pull the HD and redo the PTVNet to try networking again. If I do InstantCake also, I will lose everything recorded, right? Do I have to go back to 6.2a? I didn't have any trouble with 6.3e before.

I hope this makes a little sense.

Sincerely,
Dissappointed To Be Back At Square One

You can run PTVnet with the force option on 6.3e to re-enable. This will not work if you allow your system to go to 6.3f. Check the PTVnet instructions in this website.

DirecTV software upgrades happen though the satellite. My boxes haven’t made a call in years but the software still gets upgrades
